Apogee Remote Power Poll
« on: March 10, 2013, 03:20:33 AM »
Hi folks.

I just got a great deal on a Mini-Me, and I was wondering how people are powering them these days. I've spent (wasted?) a good amount of time searching the forums and while there is a lot of wonderful info, much of the info is now somewhat dated, due to the apparent scarcity of the once ubiquitous "Wallyworld" batteries. For instance this thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=127961.0 appears to have folks using the DVD batteries with cables from Ed @ Kind Kables, options which no longer (to my knowledge) exist.

I'll likely be using a Tascam DR 100 mkii as a "bit bucket," so the Tekkeon, which has a 5v USB output seems like an added benefit, but the batteries seem somewhat expensive for what they are and do. (~$200 for a battery sounds like a lot.)

The DVD batteries seem like a good deal if they can be found (I seem to see these on ebay, but I'm scared), also will they give enough run time?

The 7.2v RC batteries also seem like a good deal, but are they reliable?

Thanks everyone in advance.

for those of you who have voted for a 9v DVD, any advice on where to buy?

how about this: http://www.amazon.com/Lenmar-DVDU923-Universal-Battery-Portable/dp/B0011MZORU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362919084&sr=1-1&keywords=9v+dvd+battery

Don't get that one, it has a really low mAh, 2555mah i beleive.  I think your best off with Naztech or Tekkeon.

All the talk about the failure rates of the tekkeons has me thinking about approaching this 1998 style and using a SLA like this:

http://shopping.microbattery.com/s.nl/it.A/id.5519/.f

They cost $15.75 and weigh 3 pounds.

thoughts?

Hi Noah

Take a good look at the Naztech PB15000. It's a nice battery and not 3 lbs.  It is however a bit more expensive than $15.

15Ah 9V min voltage with higher voltages available. There is a 5V USB output as well but it is current limited to 200mA max.  I'm not familiar enough with the Mini-me to know what its power requirements are, but if it fits, I doubt you would be disappointed.

My preference would probably be to use the 10-14-115 from battery geeks.

Alas, all I could find was this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/External-Battery-for-Panasonic-DVD-L10-DVD-L50-DVD-LA85-DVD-LA95-DVD-LV55-/400434423585?pt=US_Rechargeable_Batteries&hash=item5d3bc06721

But it's not the 5400mah that I have.
I've also used the 7.4v little brother of that one (less run time, but I still get several hours)

I have the "Naztech" nock off, but haven't measured it's runtime.  Wish I had bought a bunch of those when they were on ebay.  Great battery.
If you have the money, go for the real Naztech.

I carry the Energizer DVDmax for backup: (It's nimh)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Energizer-Rechargeable-Portable-DVD-Battery-ER-DVDmax-8-hours-battery-life-/111014815065?pt=US_Rechargeable_Batteries&hash=item19d8ffa559
(wouldn't buy a used one)

Attached is a chart I've been working on (incomplete)
The "sled" mentioned is a home-brew 16AA nimh box

http://www.batteryspace.com/Li-ion-18650-Box-Battery-12V-13.2V-77Wh-4A-rate-with-Regulator.aspx

i use this to power the MME and and HD-P2.  Just pick up some 4pin neutrix connectors (male & female) and a splitter so that it can feed two devices!
i can run my rig longer than i can stand up at a show!

My 9v dvd battery seems to no longer hold a charge.  As soon as I plug it in it shows nothing but after charging overnight it will show all green lights.

I rarely tape anymore but am planning on taping tomorrow.  Is there anything at Radioshack I can buy that will work as a power source?  My backup plan is house power, but I'd rather not be annoying and limited to setup as far as my ac adapter will reach.   I only need 2hrs power (with 48v powering the mics).
