Schoeps Comp
« on: March 18, 2016, 09:29:56 AM »
I ran two pairs of Schoeps capsules last night for the Phil Lesh Q:

mk22 were NOS, mk41v were ~DIN (20cm, PAS)

mk22 16 bit: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=585569
mk22 24 bit: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=585574
mk41v 16 bit: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=585572
mk41v 24 bit: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=585573

I'm surprised how similar they sound, and as usual I prefer the mk22. Anyone want to add their thoughts?

At the  cap I'm not surprised; I did Wilco a while back with MK22 one night and MK41V the next night from the same spot. They were "similar" though I liked the 41V a bit more. The sweet spot would have been the MK4V I think.

But it's always close, because the sound from that spot is so good anyway...

I have run the MK4's with my NBox platinum and my 41's with my RBox a few times  >:D.  My preferred pull is based on location more often than not although the sound is very close.

I found that hypers can incrementally help when you're in a bad location, but they won't make a recording sound good if you're in a bad location or bad sounding venue.  I ended up going away from hypers because of this...I just don't listen back to my crappy sounding recordings much anymore.  I pretty much stick with cards these days.

Listen to the above sources. They difference is noticeable, mostly that the mk22 has better bass at the expense of more chatter. But otherwise, they sound very close.

I owned 41 and 22 caps for a while and I preferred the sound of the 22's.  Naturally, they won't reject chatter but the sound is "fuller" and more natural to my ears.  If I ever went the route again, I'd probably get 4's or 22's as my sole option.

I used to be the biggest hypers/supers fan out there, but I tend to like my MK4 sources better than my mk41 sources these days! Just more natural and fuller sounding, just like you all said! But I don't have to pick and choose because I have [2] Schempz rigs! If I think the recordings came out good enough, I matrix the [2] sources together, usually 50/50, and enjoy the best of both sources! They fill out and help each other tremendously on most occasions :) Its crazy going back and forth from one source to another in WaveLab's Audio Montage, and then being able to hear both sources together after just doing one by one! I can really hear how the 4/41 combo fills each other out 8)
