Recording Gear Bag Suggestions - minimalist setup
« on: July 26, 2016, 11:35:23 AM »
OK, so I need a new bag.  My backpack I use for my gear is not conducive to finding things easily in the dark and it's pretty flimsy.  I'd like something more compact - with a strap to sling over my shoulder.

My setup is basically R09HR and Church Audio amp, with every variant of cabling I may need, plus batteries and adapters.  Also I have a 18" (closed) extension pole (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/33185-REG/Matthews_429499_Telescopic_Baby_Stand_Extension.html) and super clamp plus SC right angle adapter and a video camera extension adapter (which i like 6" long)

Occasionally I may want to toss in my compact HD video camera.

That's it.  It's not a huge setup but it does take up some space.  I just need something compact with a lot of pockets to organize.  Not a bag for a recording deck, which I'll never have.

Any ideas?  Go!

This is what you need:

Straps on the front to attach your extension pole.

Thanks!  Looks like a nice cheap version of my Canon Video camera bag.

Anyone else have favorites?

I use a Domke F803 satchel for everything and anything. It easily fits my minimal field recording kit (similar to your kit), though my podcasting interview kit (Sony PCM M10, two Audix i5 mics, SD MixPre, cables & headphones; with stand/arms in a separate tripod bag) is a bit tight.

It's my daily carry man purse with the sundry items needed to get through meetings and such; sees duty during corporate photo shoots carrying a 13" laptop and tethering kit; and is my go to travel bag for any trip that doesn't include extensive hiking.

It's available in several colors, including the original sand that would likely make it easier to find things in the dark.

Thanks!  That looks very nice.  I think it's a bit more than I'm willing to spend at the moment, but definitely looks very comfy.  Thanks :)

I can't bring myself to spend much on gear bags, so I repurpose inexpensive bags intended for other purposes instead and that's worked really well for me.

I've been using a soft sided cooler as a recording bag for years.  They are cheap, have carry handles and a padded shoulder strap, usually have a big zip pocket on the front plus a couple mesh pockets on the sides, and a removable plastic tub liner which serves as internal frame.  They protect gear very well and are water-tight up to the top zipper.  On some of them there is a quick-access hatch in the center of the zippered top which needs to be taped or sewn closed to fully shed heavy spills from above and not partly funnel them into the main compartment.  Random pieces and sheets of closed cell foam wedge gear in place and create sections inside the main tub compartment.

For the super compact rig I use a small rectangular zippered shaving kit bag, which I can simply hang from one of the lower telescopic section knobs on the lightstand.

I've also used zippered lunch-box bags when I wanted something in between those two sizes.

Doesn't work for everyone but worth considering!

I got that Amazon Basics backpack as a result of Voltonic's post and it's been perfect for me.

Shoulder strap and a small amount of gear you might consider the Domke 5xb.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=697263&gclid=CJjymM-Pks4CFRVrfgodIfwFeg&Q=&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876%2C92051677682%2C&is=REG&A=details

Recently I took a small recording rig with me and used a Artist and Artisan bag without the insert.  Held all I needed.  Think Tank makes the retrospective bags that are spendy but are well made--the Domke's are well made too as are the A&A bags.
A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Same here. In fact, I once read a blog where they had re-purposed some old fishing respectively game bags as audio bags.

https://jezrileyfrench-aquietposition.blogspot.de/2012_02_01_archive.html

The advantage is that these bags are watertight, quite spacious, inexpensive and they don't look as conspicuous as proper audio gear bags.

I've added two padded camera inlets / pouches (in order to protect and organise my equipment) and I've also replaced the shoulder strap
with an OpTech S.O.S. Curve Strap (the OEM version of the Tom Bihn "Absolute strap").

Some good ideas and suggestions in this thread.

Too add my 2 cents, I used a Cabela's tackle bag to haul my gear around for years.  Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the lack of dividers in the main compartment and the fact it might have had a little too much space - rather than plan accordingly, it was easy to just dump a lot of gear into it, weight be damned.  That said, it was built like a beast.  I still have it to store my less-often-used items.

I have been using Gun Range bags for recording bags for the last few years, and LOVE them! There's NO WAY I will drop more than $100 on a bag anymore! Ive had all of the Portabrace/Kata/etc, and they are extremely well made, but way too compact IMO! Not enough pockets for all of that $$ most of the time! Anyway, the gun range bags are priced very reasonably IMO[$40-$80 max for what I have], and are extremely well made AND padded, which are PERFECT for gear! I have a Smith & Wesson Gun range bag and the SOG Tactical 6[its HUGE tho], and even my $40 Fieldline[Wal-Mart brand] Gun Range bag, are all very well made and very durable, with lots of padding since guns/ammo are involved ;) They also have compartments that have dividers and things, whereas a tackle bag usually just has plastic cases for lures inside of their main compartments! Well, At least 90% of the ones Ive looked at in stores were like that, anyway!

Those gun range bags have better padding and way more space than a PB/Kata/etc bag that costs 5x as much ;)

That's the main issue with soft-sided coolers with the plastic tub insert.  You need to devise your own dividers.  But that said, one can get pretty creative in doing so.

Apologies in advance for this slight thread jack in a different bag-related direction-

I have been using Gun Range bags

Related-
I've been meaning to find something like a large rectangular padded zippered target pistol bag in which I can carry my entire folded compact-rig stand, all pre-wired with retracted telescopic TV antenna mic bar and 6 or more miniature mics already attached to it.   It's intended as a replacement for the small kid-sized folding chair sack I currently use (you know, the ubiquitous drawstring bag with a shoulder strap which comes with every folding "stick chair") which has no padding and is a pain to get the apparatus in and out of easily without windscreens falling off and such.   This bag is not intended for the recorder, batteries, umbrella, and other stuff which goes in a separate recorder bag.

The stand is the standard small Manfrotto 001B-

Here's a couple shots of the small chair bags I've used for it, which I've posted around TS previously-

Looking for something with a nice faux-fur liner, good padding, and a full-zipper opening so it opens up like a book.  Needs to be about 8" wide X about 26" long.  Also best if i's simply rectangular instead of pistol shaped and doesn't look too much like a gun case!  If anyone has a good suggestion, please let me know.

What about this Gutbucket? I hold ALL of my umbrellas + Rubber Mallet/etc inside of this bag! Which also doubles as the PERFECT minimalist bag for my mkxx>PFA>dr70d setup IMO too ;D
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Fieldline-Tactical-Shooter-Bag-Black/26357373

And this is the Fieldline gun range bag that holds ONE of my rigs w windscreens perfectly ;) i can fit both of my rigs into this bag, as long as i don't need to run my big outdoor screens! Either VMS>70d rig or PFA>70d rig fits perfect tho! Seems they don't have my model online anymore! But this is a COPY/CLONE of my SOG Tactical 6 range bag, and I HIGHLY recommend that bag, but its HUGE! This is a Fieldline clone of the SOG Tactical 6 :) But I am more than happy with my Fieldline bags for their great value and well made durability :)

Something like the first one would be good, just needs to be about twice that length.

Thanks Bean, I'll keep looking in that direction.

This may be just the ticket! Big thanks Voltronic.  Size of the larger one: 6"W x 6"D 26"L = probably perfect.  The smaller one appears to be closer to the size I imagined for this, but may be a couple inches short in reality.  The stand itself measures almost exactly 20" long when fully collapsed, which is exactly the length of the smaller bag.  The mic-bar attachments I use add a few inches to that so the shorter bag would seem a non-starter, but in reality it may bulge out at the ends by a few inches.

It's worth noting that in the description of the XL version of the bag, they mention it was enlarged to fit Manfrotto tripods, among AR-15s and other things.

Check out their other bags / cases as well, under Nylon Gear on the nav bar.

The Midrange bag has been my work briefcase / bag for 7-8 years now.  The quality is on par with Land's End or L.L. Bean, high quality zippers and Velcro, ballistic nylon, etc.

They have lots of other really interesting products if you look through the site.  I have some of their portable tools, and they have excellent prices on real USA- made paracord which of course is equal to gaffer tape in usefulness. ;D

Gutbucket,

This 5 pocket yoga mat bag may work for you. I have one that is perfect for my KMR82i shotgun housed in a Rycote zep and dead cat. The boom pole sits in one of the lower mesh pockets and I use a velcro strap to hook the upper part of the pole to the bag strap. My Dr70D fits in another pocket and there are lots of places to hook headphones, cables, etc.

The Amazon shoulder bag is nice and fits everything!

Only thing I can't figure out is how to tighten the outside loops to hold my extension pole...

There are separate lower straps for this.  I'm away now otherwise I'd tell you exactly how.  If that doesn't work out, you can put the pole in the front and clip it in with the bag closures and then tighten them.  That's how I carry my backlight stand base.

Yeah they don't seem to "catch" they just slide.  However I'll take your advice!
