Small 4 ch Recorders - DR2-d, M10, DR44WL, H4n Pro, H5
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:50:46 PM »
I am in a band (drums) and also record live shows, stealth and mic. When I am playing, if the soundboard is on stage, which is about half the time, I can have a recorder, normally the DR2-d (discontinued) near me to monitor inputs with a mic-in feed from external mics (AT853 or CM300) into the unit from FOH with a line in feed from the soundboard. When the soundboard is on stage, I do not want the recorder FOH unattended. If the soundboard is FOH, then its straight forward and have the soundman check on the inputs from the external mics and line in. Or use the on board mics and line in. The M10 (also discontinued), while it seems to be a great recorder, cannot handle external mics and line in for 4 channel recording (similar to the DR-40 and DR44)

I upgraded to the DR44-WL for the better mics, but it does not have four channel input with line in and external mic in only on board mics and line. I like the onboard mics for for quick recordings easy set up etc or band practice with a line in soundboard feed. Why Tascam did not put a separate mic in on the "ugraded" DR44, I'll never know.

Besides the H4n Pro or H5, is there another recorder that can record on board mics or line in and mic in inputs like the DR2-D? I'm leaning toward the H4n Pro because of size compared to the H5.

I believe the Tascam DR70D may be what you need. I've never used the internal mics so I can't vouch for them, but I wouldn't thing they would be any worse than a Zoomie
Mics: ADK A51s; AT4041; Superlux S502; CK91 active w/homebrew BB; AT853; Naiant X-X; Nak 300's
Recorders: M10; DR-60D; DR-70D

Roland R-26.  Excellent internal mics, with variations and mic (and line) inputs.

I looked at the 70-D and may pick one up, but the mics seem better on the H4Pro and H5, although my taper friends really like theirs. The ability to record practices easily is my biggest constraint.

I need to look into the R26 a bit more.

If I was planning to do one-touch recording using internal microphones and wanted the capability of adding external microphones, there is no other recorder that I would choose over the Roland R-26.  Do your due diligence and compare a few units before making a decision.

I decided to get the H4 Pro rather than the R26 and get better mics - Line CM3s and Superlux S241s and a 20dB attenuator for line in conversion to the mic input. I also made up made up some right angle stubbies from Neutrik NM3F/MXIs for a better fit in my bag. I still may punt to the Tascam 70D if it doesn't work out.

Everyone's entitled to make a mistake.  Of the recorders you exclusively listed, I'd go with an M10 without question...but then again, I would never use a Zoom (including the brand new one given to me for free that I finally sold for a few bucks to put towards another recorder).

The H6 also fits the description. I personally have had no problems with Zoom devices and Im not sure why people are so negative about them. If you are willing to spend more there are clearly more professional level devices with better pres etc but I own a H6, F4 and F8 and they are all reasonable for what they cost in my opinion.

If you're on a tight budget, and can't go for a Zoom F4 (or even better Sound Devices / Zaxcom) then undoubtedly a Tascam DR70D is the best buy there is right now for a 4x XLR input recorder.
