Earthworks SR-71s - Opinions
« on: December 13, 2003, 11:17:19 AM »
Just wondering what the group has to say about Earthworks SR-71s.

Any recommendations for cables, Pre-amp/A-D (at 24/96), and anything else that comes to mind ?
(i.e.- ortf vs. spread, sweet-spot distance, etc.)

Go easy, I'm just getting started...

The Earthworks cardioids sound best in ORTF. The 71s are decent mics, but they're the ones that have the most pronounced inherent bass rolloff. The 77s are a bit better about this. I'm not even sure if the 71s are made anymore (or is that the 69s?).

All your questions depend on budget. Give us an idea of that and we can probably help you out a lot more.

BTW, if my buyer flakes out, I might have a pair of like-new SR77s up for sale again soon, so keep an eye out if you're interested.
Out of the game … for now?

THere has been some discussion on this board about SR-71's frying/damaging the UA-5's.  No personal experience with it myself, but when I was researching these mics, I came across it.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

i know beckyt runs the 77s through a ua5 w/out problems, i wouldnt see why 71s would be any different, they are basically the same mic as the 77 but without the quality control that the 77s recieve right?

I used to run SR-71's->DMIC-20->DA-p20 and it sounded great, was easy to run, etc.
I have 77's now but i never ran them into the dmic-20->da-p20, but overall i havent noticed a significant difference between the two. The 77's are more forgiving and flexible, pickup a little more bass, are a little clearer. You can find 71's now dirt cheap, around $300+, and they'd be the best used mic for the money around.

I ran SR71>UA-5 for a while, with no problems

great sounding mic, they absolutely sing for acoustic music!
