Title: Wave won't transfer completely to PC
Post by: darktrain on September 28, 2014, 06:46:25 AM
Recorded a show the other day to my Iriver H320(backup rig) and the file is there...almost 2hours, I can play the file except it gets hung up around the 39 min mark and also stops transferring at the same point. If I fast forward over that point it will still playback but I can not find any way to transfer the full file, I have tried a lot of stuff, I don't think this a bad header, I have tried the raw data transfer, etc... Any ideas out there? Not crucial since it was a backup but just bugging the shit out of me.

Really no help here, but have you tried opening it directly from the device into CD Wave?  Or some editor?

Yes, about a half dozen different editors and always freezes at the same spot

sorry.  I really do have nothing. Glad to hear it is only a backup copy.

from a command prompt  try  xcopy with the /c   which is supposed to ignore CRC errors.       ex    xcopy /c  h:\somefile.wav   c:\

sounds like it could be a bad spot in the storage medium. Using Audacity, I would try selecting as close to the bad spot in the file as possible and exporting that, then doing the same with the part after it. Might be the best you can do

While the file header might be OK, it sounds like you might have developed a bad block on the SD card.  That would explain it hanging in the same place every time when trying to read or transfer.  I would try badronald's suggestion, but one of these might also help:

That is a no go, its one file so no way to split it  or access the second part except it will play it

not sure if I need a walk through but that didn't do anything

Analog out real time and splice it back together.

Oh, well worth a shot.  Regardless of if you can save this recording or not, try formatting the card and running another recording of the similar length or even a copy to-and-from of a similar size file and see if freezes in the same spot.  If so, then you've definitely got a card with bad sectors.  On a hard drive, you get around this but on an SD card you may be SOL.  I had this happen to me recently with a 64 micro sd.  Very annoying, especially since the card wasn't that old, but I admit it was used very heavily.  An incorrect mount / unmount of the file system is sometimes enough to bork these beyond repair.

Oh, well that shows you what I know about the iRiver.  In that case, what you would need to do is crack it open and remove the drive, then directly connect it to your computer.  You're not going to be able to do any recovery connecting through the device itself - you need to connect the actual drive directly to your computer.  I did this once for a failing hard drive in an iPod 5g.  Your iRiver probably has a notebook drive that you will have to connect using an adapter directly to your motherboard.  Then you can run Scandisk with the option to fix bad sectors ticked.  Or, back when I worked in PC repair we would have good results with this (not free) utility: https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm (https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm)

The Iriver basically is acts as a external hard drive as it is, it is a drag and drop so I don't think removing it will matter in this case, and I have removed and replaced the HD's in these before so its not that I would 't open it.

In my experience you will get better results doing file recovery / formatting / etc. when you mount a drive directly to the motherboard of the PC you're using to run said utilities from.  The iPod I mentioned was using Rockbox so it was also acting as a drag-and-drop device, but with the additional USB interface in between I was not able to successfully perform any of the above tasks until I removed the drive and mounted it directly.

That said, be very careful to read up on how your iRiver expects your HDD partition table to be written before you decide to delete and re-create new partitions and re-format.  Hopefully it's not wacky like my old iPod was - this was the BS I had to deal with: http://brianschrameck.com/how-to-align-partitions-on-an-upgraded-ipod-hard-drive-in-windows (http://brianschrameck.com/how-to-align-partitions-on-an-upgraded-ipod-hard-drive-in-windows)

Before you do any of this though, try mounting the iRiver normally in Windows.  Open an elevated command prompt (Start - type "cmd", right-click, Run As Administrator), then type CHKDSK /R X: (Where "X" is the drive letter where your iRiver is mounted).
Run this overnight - it will take many hours.  Adding the /R switch tells CHKSDK to recover and relocate information from any bad sectors it finds on the drive.  As I said before though, this will work much more reliably if you pop the drive out and mount it to your PC directly.  It's just a big pain in the ass...

Ran CHKDSK last night then tried transfering today, it worked, although It said 3 times that it couldn't transfer  and asked if i wanted to try again, I noticed it had downloaded a bit more than before so I kept hitting retry and it finally all downloaded acter about 45 minutes, but it has a bunch of dropouts in the middle of the set roughly where it was freezing up. Conclusion...time to replace the HD or do that compact flash mod.

Glad you could at least get something.  Did CHKDSK report any bad sectors?  Either way, I would replace the drive ASAP.
