btree vs archive.org
« on: March 15, 2016, 10:48:38 AM »
I am trying to figure out where I should post my recordings. What is the main difference? btree is for seeding only (data lives on seeders computer) and archive the music is uploaded and lives on the archive server?

LMA is only if the band approves of the archive, and is more of a permenant solution.

bt.etree.org is a torrent site that doesnt guarantee easy availability.

Is LMA strict on naming conventions and supporting documentation? I see for some shows tracks are named with song title and others use the bbyyy-mm-ddsxtxx format.

^ I don't think the LMA forces you to use the proper conventions, although for everyone else's sake it's good to do so.

The main limitation of the LMA is that it is obviously only for the bands that appear there, but other than that, it is a superior distribution platform. I use it for everything that I can use it for. Otherwise I use streaming on Soundcloud, which works but is harder to set up.

LMA for approved bands for sure. LMA now creates torrent files as well, so bt.etree is unnecessary for LMA bands, IMO.  There may be some folks who check bt.etree that don't check LMA, I guess. I haven't torrented a show in almost 4 years. All my share-friendly non-LMA tapes are belong to me until I get internet service at home again.

So if a band isn't listed on the page they should not be uploaded to LMA?

Correct, though if you know anyone in the band you can also ask if they'd like to be added:

(If the band allowed you to record) Contact the band, if they aren't familair with archive link them the FAQs, recommend that they start their own collection. I've prompted bands to do so - and I am often surprised that folks are unfamiar with archive (or its benefits.)

edit: I see this was just stated already while I wasn't looking!

^ yes to all that about the LMA

The only suggestion I can make about file naming is to not use spaces in the file names. The system strips out spaces and makes some characters uppercase which can mess up the song order in the player (uppercase comes before lowercase).

If you have any questions about the LMA, head over to this thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=175536.0
If you have a problem relating to the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) please send an e-mail to us admins at LMA(AT)archive(DOT)org or post in the LMA thread here and we'll get on it.

Be sure to read the band's stipulations on the LMA before posting there. Some like the North Mississippi Allstars do not allow soundboard or matrix recordings.

I've tried to get bands to sign on to the LMA with no success. It does sort of commit them to a policy which some are reluctant to do.

If you don't want to go through the trouble to do it legitimately, just upload whatever you want to Community Audio. That's where tapers who don't care dump everything. It's not policed, so you can find tons of bands who have denied permission to be hosted on LMA. Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, etc. Plus plenty of jambands that would probably be on LMA if the tapers could be bothered to follow the rules.

Please, no. I believe Sloan is being sarcastic. This is NOT the proper use of Community Audio. Sloan is aware of this which is why I think he is making such a statement.

There may be some folks who check bt.etree that don't check LMA, I guess.

I post to both (for the rare bands I record that allow either) for this reason. Personally, I go to LMA kind of infrequently, usually when searching for a specific show or band, but I check bt.etree every few days to see what pops up...
