Topic: Getting a board recording on a USB flash drive?!?!

Evening all,

Okay, first off let me say I've never recorded audio via the sound board. I always get external audience recordings to go with my video footage, however I've been thinking about it lately after I saw a local band post on a club's website on facebook.

Basically the band asked if they could get a board recording of their set, and someone replied suggesting they check with the sound guy and they'd probably just need to give him a flash drive.

Has anyone heard of doing it this way? I never have!

Maybe you've misinterpreted their remarks...Its a digital recording...a USB Flash drive stores digital media...

We dont know what he's mastering on...

But - He's likely just copying the files to the USB drive...no different that any other digital files...pictures, etc...

I guess you could master to USB drive - but I sort of doubt it thats whats happening.

That's how it sounded and it's why I asked. It sounded like it was being plugged into the desk and audio captured to the USB but I've never heard of this.

Some of the Yamaha digital desks (and I assume other brands are the same) can drop a simple stereo mix to a USB stick - ie whatever is being sent to the main outs. The Yamaha ones just do this in MP3 and I don't think there are any other options available.

Not ideal as a single source but I can think of a specific occasion where this allowed us to patch a few seconds of drop-out on our main source - so nice to have as a safety net.

Edit to add: and, of course, a nice easy way to get a board source to crisp up a decent aud recording, especially if video is your priority.

Mark Knopfler has started selling his live recordings through USB stick (Fender shaped) but only as a transfer media, since a pro editing has been made before selling.

Hah - shit, wish I'd known - we just ran the Yamaha LS9 last weekend!!!

I did notice the USB stuff - but assumed it was for saving and loading scenes/shows.

Odd - I was about to make a thread asking if anyone is starting to notice digital mixers showing up in the wild...they are very small.

The other day - I guess I was lucky my mentor/boss showed up for this show! - I haven't a clue how to run an LS-9!!! (although I learned quite a bit the other day)

I ended up taking analog outs from the XLRs - (the only analog option!) - but it was nice to be able to dial those down a few db - as they were too hot for my recording mixer inputs.

I've gotten Dopapod SBD recordings from their sound guy with a microsdxc card and a USB flash drive. Works just fine

Never thought of this!!  I have an extra USB stick sitting in my desk at work.  I'll throw it in the bag.

I actually witnessed this as I was setting up for the late show at a venue; the band got their usb stick from the venue crew with their set on it.

I was watching the soundman for Lettuce record their performance using a USB stick.  They ran a sub mix to a Yamaha mixer w/USB off of a house Behringer X32 Mixer.  Not a big Behringer fan, but this X32 is actually a really nice mixer especially with the buyout-takeover of Midas and the use of the Midas pre amps.

I find it hard to believe they have midas preamps but infact this console does.. It will be interesting to see how well this console works. The first generation of beringer boards crashed all the time. I might pick one up to do one off gigs. Its pretty small. Just have to plug in the house snake and left and right and the few outboard effects I want to use. $3000 is not that much for what it does.

They had rented this board specifically to test it out and ended up using it for couple shows, as everyone that saw it said the same thing: Behringer...really?  Me being one of them. I gotta admit that it is a nice mixer and performed quite well with some excellent results.  It is priced to sell.

My local club has had a X32 mixer for 6 months, FOH engineer loves it...no problems, he records everything onto a USB stick and I've done multitrack off the soundcard from the back onto a lappie.
