Is there a video taping friendly bands list, or is this all strictly stealth?

i don't think there is a list, at least not one that i'm aware of.  but some bands are open to video taping.  i know many post rock bands are.  i just filmed explosions in the sky.

Any Josh Homme band is open video as well (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and Desert Sessions).  Also, Nick Oliveri's stuff is as well when he plays (Mondo Generator).  Pretty much anyone that runs with those 2 guys are open taping/video.  Just make sure you talk to Hutch before hand, and he'll hook you up.  Hutch is the Road Manager/Tour Manager for those bands.  Other bands like Dredg, Mars Volta and Clutch are open taping/video as well.  If I can think of anymore off the top of my head, I'll shoot them to you in a PM.

Clutch is open to video taping? Man, wish I knew that before hand. They come to my town twice a year or so.

Dec 28th High On Fire, Never Been Caught, and Clutch in Norfolk. If I knew before hand then I'll see about getting some mics and a camcorder inside near the soundboard area, (that where I usually tape in this club anyway) then I'm there  I'll email their managment from their website and see what happens

Get to the venue early and ask for Oscar Hernandez (Tour Manager) and if he gives you the go ahead, talk to Lee Brintall (soundguy).  They were awesome when I saw them and had no problems at all.  My buddy Mike has taped them 2 or 3 times with video and Mic stands, as well has my friend Rhys Herrmann.  Good luck!!

sent email to Clutch. I know this venue tends to like to have tapers on the bands guest list but getting there early is the next best option. I can work two cameras and edit a descent video.

Does Clutch allow SBD recordings? I doubt anyone but me will be taping in my area.

you're lucky.  I wish they would play in toronto.  I'd consider going to the detroit show but the border is such hell.  Especially with recording gear.

Also add dredg to that list of video friendly bands. They are cool w/ it as long as the venue is cool,  they are the headliner, and if you get the ok from their manager, Rodney, first. And please let me know if you roll vid; I'd love a copy and have lots to pass on....thanks

in my experience 90% of all indie bands that tour small venues do not care about filming.  added to that about 98% of all hardcore acts allow filiming. btat.wagnerone.com is pretty good at documenting which bands allow video, but they do mostly focus on documenting audio policies.

Just saw Polyphonic Spree tonight...they are cool with video.   And shit they've got a million people up there on stage playing all kinds of instruments so it makes for an insteresting video for sure.   It was a little tough to tape since they go from dim lights to super bright lights instantly.   But when the lights are up bright you can get some great shots.

At the Clutch show in Indianapolis, we were told by the tour manager that there is no taping, audio or video.

This makes 3 times in the last 4 years that I've tried to tape a Clutch show, and have been turned away each time.   Whoever says that they are taper friendly is W-R-O-N-G.

Guess I'll chime in: Los Lobos will allow video taping on a case by case basis. Send the archivist Dan Gale (dgale@loslobos.org) an email a few days ahead of time so that he can work on arrangements for you. Most of the time it is no problem; but at some venues (Clear Channel & HOB venues come to mind) or at certain shows (like when they were shooting their own DVD back in July at The Fillmore),  it's not possible.

Garaj Mahal is open to anything.  You can set up onstage, SBD, FOB, anywhere, as well as video.  They are incredibly nice guys.

Now I know for sure that YMSB is not video friendly. 

Neither is Clutch.

Note: You might want to use an underwater housing for your camera to keep the blood and jizz off 

and TMBG at a show once mentioned (after seeing my audio rig) next time I should bring the video rig.  However I don't think they have an officially policy for audio or video.  It wasn't easy to get my audio rig in.  But they did allow it.

i had a great shot from the 23rd row on the floor at the paramount in seattle this friday so i may try to deploy myself similarly again. though i have usually been partial to balconies when vidding.

i guess what i'd want to make sure is that both the 3 chip cams were being tended to simply because they should grab the sickest images possible.

Hutch was always the man who would get people in with their equipment if the venue had problems with it, but I talked to him Sunday night and he said it was getting to be too much of a hassle and it was interfering with his duties as soundman.

I will try to talk to Josh at the Cleveland show and see if we can get clearance to videotape in Detroit the next night.   Natasha, the keyboard player for this tour, is cool and fun to watch, and it would be a shame if somebody didn't get at least one good video with this lineup.

all my other tapes i've ever made have been on the stealth tip, so fear not my taping brother.

my cam is a panasonic, don't know the exact model number.

If i can get into the balcony for taping (since the show is soldout, i'm sure they'll have it open), i'll just clamp my mics and throw my cam on the edge.  Sneaking it in shouldn't be a problem.  they hardly ever do patdowns at st. andrews and even if they do, i'll have it in my audio taping bag anyway, hidden away.

I taped grandaddy with video from the balcony before and had no troubles.  also, from my experiences at st. andrews is if the band specifically says no taping, then they'll enforce it...if they don't, anything goes.  however, i haven't been to a show there in quite sometime.

sidewalksnoozer, i'll hit you up on aim before the show or shoot you a pm or whatever.  i'm pretty sure if we can get all these cameras in, there won't be a problem running them.

Well, if the venue staff aren't nazis, we might be able to videotape.   Hutch said he didn't want to be responsible for helping people get their gear in, but I don't think he or the band cares if anyone tapes.

I'll try to talk to Josh at the Cleveland show and see what he says.   I won't be able to get online between then and the next night in Detroit, but if anyone who's taping has a cell phone and wants to PM me with their number, I will try to call and let you know what I find out, so we can coordinate where we want to film from.

If we're able to pull off a multi-cam, I'll be glad to do the editing, since I have experience using Vegas and have plenty of hard drive space to capture all the footage.

Most of the times videotaping is allowed by the bands, but not with the management/venues.
They're giving me the hardest times!

Just be polite to bands, get e-mail address and start writing that you just love their music and that
you wanna videotape the gig.
What I normally do is buying any official stuff (like T-shirts, CD's etc)  too, to support these guys.
Do that and tell them. Most of the times they depend on the sales of that stuff.
ALWAYS send the band a (DVD) copy. Even bands like their own footage....     
And do NOT make any copies except for yourself.... and stick to that promiss.

i think it's definitely worth a try.  i know of a few permission shots that have come out.  i think they're still small enough that you could even get away with "implied permission" if the venue's friendly and the promoter doesn't end with blues.

new pornographers didn't seem to care either, but security does, and the band doesn't care that security does.

I shot YYYs about 11 times from 2003-2006 and whenever i asked they said yes, their were times I stealth just cuz it was easier, like when they were opening for larger bands.  i do not know if they changed their policy or even have a taping policy, i missed the 2009 tour.  They are with Universal and I found that many many Universal bands were ok with allowing filming. 

For those of you wondering if a band allows filming, try asking, look up their manager or label, you would be suprised who will say yes if you ask nicely and show you shoot good video.  With the explosion of digital cameras and cell phones they know people are shooting video anyways.

If you just like shooting bands, shoot me a PM with your location and equipment,  i know a ton of local and small touring bands that will be going out on tour and they will all be happy to let you shoot video(if you dont suck at it)

I would love to film Matisyahu next time he comes around North Carolina.  I recently bought an HD cam and it yields amazing results.  I even film multi-cam mixes too.
