Do those pass 24/48 or 24/96?

With the CL20 and CL25, you have to enable 24/96 output using a key sequence.  They are discontinued since CAL is out of business, but they got amazing reviews for CDDA playback in addition to video quality and can be had for about 600-800.  I thought that both 2900 and 540D already did it.  It's been awhile since I did the research, but I was looking for a transport for 24/96 DVDV playback to an external DAC and those made my list.  There are others if you are willing to spend more.  Although, my upgrade plan has evolved a little bit lately after reading Nicks report on the Toshiba.  I had settled on the 2900 but if his modded Toshiba plays well, I may do that instead.

I use a Pioneer dv333 to pass 24/48 & 24/96 from dvd-video.  It doesn't support dvd-audio and was discontinued long ago.  If you can find one used, I bet it would be very cheap.

I don't have a DAC right now, but I do run the Pioneer 333 and a Panasonic dvd player that supports dvd-audio (but resamples 24/96 to 24/48) digi-out to a Panasonic xr45 receiver.  The xr45 uses digital amps, and sounds pretty damn good for a $300 receiver.  The xr45 is discontinued and has been replaced by the xr50.  I have no idea if the 50 sounds as good, but it is getting good reviews on the audio boards.

I think that a dvd-v or dvd-a player providing a digital feed to one of the new digital amps like the panasonic Craig mentioned or the sonys I mentioned is a great way to get high end sound to a decent pair of speakers at a fraction of the traditional high-end price.  It also is sounding to me like, with the price of dvd recorders, software and media rapidly dropping, 24 bit is rapidly heading into the mainstream for us taper/live music lover folks -- which is great news!

well....a fraction of the traditional high end price?
lets look at that.

for the cost of the 5000es, I could easily put together a used system that would be way high end.
say, a benchmark DAC-1 > DNA (or many other HQ solid state amps).

true, used vs. new.

I'm really pumped to check out one of these Sonys.  I want Doug to swing me an in home demo.  Or, I can just buy one from Tweeter here in Portland and then return it for full refund.
I've found this particular model for as low as $948 online (several places) where as its usualy $1500 retail everywhere else.

I'm trying to stay objective, but i've got some gear snobbery that gets in the way.  Doug says it will outperform my pending Manley Stingray (arriving next tuesday).  I'm very skeptical about that claim.

Is that with commercial recordings?
