Oade PMD 661 Warm Mod vs Concert Mod
« on: January 22, 2016, 09:08:46 AM »
Has anyone here done a head-to-head comp of the Oade Marantz PMD 661 Concert Mod vs the Warm Mod?  I have an Oade Concert Mod PMD 661 and I love it.  I'm considering picking up a PMD 661 MKII and I'm trying to decide if an Oade Warm Mod machine would be the route to take or should I go with a second PMD 661 Concert Mod?

The mics that I would be using with the PMD 661 MKII could be any of the following:  Gefell UM 70, M20, M21, M27, M70, M93, M94(I have made several nice recordings with the Gefell M27 omnis and the Concert Mod 661) – Milab VM-44 links (I also have made some dynamite recordings with the Milabs and my Concert Mod PMD 661).

I know that there are several of you using Schoeps mics with the Warm Mod PMD 661's.  Can you describe the effect on the sound of the Schoeps recordings when using the Warm Mod PMD 661's?

thanks,

David

I have an WMOD on my PMD661.  I discussed this with  Doug and specifically as to what I mostly am recording.  The Warm Mod was preferred due to the majority of the recordings I was making had been instrumental, Jazz mostly.

The WMOD uses low distortion FET (field-effect transistor) chips and the CMOD uses  low distortion op (operational amplifiers) amps,  I am not too familiar with the op amp's.  With the daily horn sections I was recording, the FET chip results in a warmer sound with wind instruments and was why I went this route after talking with Doug.  My mic's I use today are also FET mic's.  I am not positive of that being even more of a factor to go with the WMOD for myself as these where not the mic's I was using when I 1st purchased the PMD661 with the WMOD, but based the upgrade on the music I mostly recorded at that time.

I would contact Doug and ask his opinion based upon the mic's you are using and especially what you are recording the most of in re. to genre of music.

I've  only just started running Schoeps, but with 41s and 4022s I hear a nice warm rounding of lows and kids, highs maybe just a touch, and a nice warm anti harshness blanket over everything. Maybe a tiny loss of detail but themtradeoff is well worth it.  A non engineers take.  ;D

Thanks to everyone for their responses.  After communicating with Doug Oade about the mod choices that I mentioned and the mics that I run I have decided to get the Concert Mod on my 2nd PMD 661.

Marc do you have links to any of your recordings with the Schoeps MK41's and the DPA 4022's using the Warm Mod?  I think that the other TS member that I noticed running the Warm Mod 661 with Schoeps was using Schoeps MK41's too.  As far as running hypers goes I run Gefell M210's and I love the way that they sound "as is" which is one of the reasons why I chose the (transparent) Concert Mod...  It would be interesting to hear the same brand of hypers running side-by-side using a warm and a concert modded 661.

I'm really horrible about keeping track of links. Have none with 41s into wmod 661, some good ones running 4022>661 are 5/2/15 Ray Wyley Hubbard, 6.6.15 Bela fleck, 4/24/12 Los Lobos,  not sure where those ended up being posted.

Actually I'd thought about asking you and perks to do a comp with your two sets of MK41's, using your warm mod and my concert mod...
