2channel receiver/tuner suggestions
« on: May 22, 2010, 09:49:52 AM »
So I'm in the market for a 2channel receiver/tuner for my "home office". I want digital inputs, mainly for my Fostex Dat player (optical or AES), then your analog connections for phono, cassette & cd player. I will most likely hook up my PC to run through this as well. Speakers will be my long time, old school Advent Baby II's and a Advent Granit subwoofer.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated, thanks ...

Budget?
Do you really need a receiver / tuner, or will an integrated preamp/amp (no tuner) do?

Budget in the consumer range, 500 beans I suppose, kinda all depends on what is available and would fits my needs.

And no it doesn't have to have a tuner, but it would be a nice option since I do still listen to the radio on occasion  ...

I own an Outlaw preamp, very nice gear at a great price.  I have the 970 just because of the digi input needs.

Harmon Kardon HK3490. You can buy refurb ones direct from Harmon on Ebay. I don't see any right now, but they pop up regularly. Newer HK stuff has a reputation for not being the most reliable but good sounding. I liked the sound of my HK surround receiver from 4-5 years ago and had no problems.

You could also buy a cheap dac vdac, dacmagic or no name Chinese and vintage receiver.

The Outlaw stuff is good my brother owns a 970 and I may bid on that 990 myself. They are pre-amps only and will also need a power amp with them. The 970 has no phono pre-amp the 990 does and is a newer model.

Look for an Adcom amp, Im still impressed with mine.  they are up on ebay all the time for $100-200, they are stable to 2ohms and sound better than any integrated IMO.

that would be a completely made in the USA rig.

The more I look it appears as if a "simple" 2 channel receiver doesn't have any type of digital input. Can anyone confirm this ? Or I am just missing something ...
