i know there are some techy HD guys around these parts...

what's the main difference between these two tv's?

my buddy wanted the LED engine one because that's the 'newest technology' but after seeing both side by side at fry's on the same settings, the cheaper one looked far better and brighter at more angles.  so he ended up getting it instead of the LED engine set.

is there anything that the LED offers that i should give it a second look?

I believe the main benefit of the LED based units is lower power consumption (Nice but no quality improvement) & greatly improved bulb life (the real benefit), eliminate the "spinning color wheel" effect, and finally have a slightly larger color space.  It is my understanding that the trade off is the LEDs do not output as much light as the traditional bulbs.

Side by Side in store is a bad way to compare HDTV picture quality as stores do not calibrate the monitors and the signal may not be the best quality.

Jake: What's this?
Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.
