optical rt-angle adapter experiences
« on: May 17, 2005, 12:13:05 PM »
Hey all. I just got a UA-5 and probably like everyone else using a UA-5 optical out I'd like to have a rt-angle toslink connector coming out of the back. After searching around a bit it looks like all that can be had at the moment are rt-angle adapters.
I saw one post here in another threat saying those were crap and introduced pops and clicks. I'm wondering if that seems to be everyone else's experience with these or was that maybe a bad batch or something. Any thoughts? I just ordered one to try from american digital.
Thanks!

In my experience the kind you can pick up at radio shack is *alright*, but don't go for the cheapies on ebay. I've had bad luck with those. If you can handle it, try and avoid using them altogether. That's what I do now and haven't had a single glitch since.

I used the Rat Shack version on both ends of my optical cable from the UA-5 to the JB3, but after about 5-6 shows, I started getting the "pops and clicks".  Now I just use the straight ends on the cables.  Not worth the risk IMHO.

Thanks for the info guys!

I just heard from American Digital that my adapter is on backorder so I cancelled that order. I messed around with the placement of the UA-5 and my RakGear pack last night and I think I can make the straight one work for now by lining it up with a little gap in the rack and strapping it in place. So I'll just see if any real rt-angle cables are ever available and go with this setup for now.

A round of T's on me!

If you're looking for the right angle cable, try here:

http://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce/mcm/en_US/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=24-6475&N=4

I'm going to give that a shot if the beefy cable I just ordered doesn't work out nicely for me.

FYI, found an alternate source for integrated right-angle toslink / mini cables.  Check the Retail forum for details.  (Aberg83 beat me to it.  :P)  Don't have to mess around with adapters, that way.

Looks like it's the same one, just with a greatly inflated price. The 100 day lead time from Newark and SP saying they don't know when they'll get more in backs this up IMO.
SP has some cool stuff and Chris is helpful, but their prices are consistently higher than just about anywhere else for the same item. I'll generally only use them if I'm all out of other options.
