If you have some time before you leave this would be the ideal thing for you to throw together for a festival.

I get 5 hours of record time out of 2 x Panasonic Rechargeable Ni-Mh (AA) batteries in my Sony PCM-M1.  Not sure how the power draw varies from the D8 but on 4 of these batteries I can get @ 10 hours of record time in my M1.

thank you for the page! I will try that out at my next festival. Yesterday, I ran 9 hours with 4 AA batteries. but I was also running LP as they took 2 of my DAT's at the door. so would running LP have anything to do with my longer battery life? or that I am using a BB to power my DPA's and running line In so all the power that is needed is going to the D8? thanks again for your feedback! +T

I had a TCD-D7 for about ten years until it died last september because of mechanical problems.  >:( I used ist mainly for recording film sound.

I powered it with a 6V Lead Acid Battery with 3.5 Ah and that was absolutely reliable. The battery was about as big as the D7 itself but it became never ever empty and I could record a whole day long!

Disadvantage: The DAT "thinks" that there's an external AC adaptor plugged in so it doesn't go into power save mode and the battery level isn't displayed. Maybe you can modify your D8 so that the external power can be connected through to the AA battery hole in the back - then this won't happen.

Cost: Lead Acid Battery (Panasonic) about 20 Euros in germany (25 Dollars) and a fitting charger about the same price.

they took 2 dat tapes at the door? WTF?
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

yeah... I couldn't fit all of my stuff in my crotch. (I already had my 4060, Battery Box, D8 and 2 90m DATs.) when I put 2 more DATs in there it looked funny. like I had a stool in my pants. so I put them in my hat and wore it on my head. But with my luck... they made me take it off. I just played stupid. "oh well these are my mixes and I didn't want you guys to take them" and they took the 2 DATs and said I could pick them up at the security office when I leave. which was tight that I get them back.  ;D I didn't mind going 32 kHz. its all good!
