I have had this pole for awhile and used it with a super clamp for stage lip at the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH where there truly is a lip you can clamp. The problem was that the super clamp is a scissor type clamp and the pole would always tilt forward a bit. With theatre balcony season approaching I wanted to pick up a larger clamp to ensure I can clamp onto larger diameter balcony rails. After seeing Andyjah's quick release clamp, I knew that was the clamp I needed. It also is a level/square clamp and won't tilt when clamped onto stage lip. Playing around I realized that the pole would also fit onto my kick drum mic stand that has a 5/8" diameter pole. The only problem with the pole itself is that the base/pole connection is two pieces and a little flaky. I fixed this by sealing the seam with super glue and a couple layers of gaff tape. This has ensured a strong & sturdy connection. I tested the pole & quick release clamp on a pole in my basement and it is solid and won't slip with the weight of my akg 414's. I now have a versatile pole that can be used for on stage placement, stage lip placement, stage lip clamping, theater arm rest clamping & balcony rail clamping.

Very nice! I've been looking for an alternative to the Bogen pole which is too long to get into carry-on bags.
-
Just wanted to post an update to this. The stand has worked well up until last night when the top collar cracked as I was tightening the screw. I was not overtightening or anything, just routine use. I contacted them and they are supposed to replace it under warranty, but I figured it might be worth mentioning. If I had to do it over again, I might go with an APIC custom of a similar size.
-
I have an APIC custom extension and use it with a Manfrotto quick release clamp. Unless I'm outside and using my regular mic stand, the APIC/QRC is almost the only thing I use. The great thing about getting an APIC custom is you can specify almost everything about it; top and bottom fittings, number of sections, extended length, closed length and probably several others I'm not aware of. The only two downsides to the APIC is the initial cost - about 2.5-3x the cost of the Mathews and the difficulty finding their webite - http://www.x-tendtechnologies.com .
-
Flipp:
Can you tell us more about your custom stand?
- max height
- min height
- weight
- how many sections
I tried to order a custom stand from them about a year ago and everything started off just fine. They were friendly and said they would get back to me with a quote for my request. After a month or so I called back, someone said they would call me back. Then, I tried again about a month later and only got a message, so I left a voice mail...my call was never returned. At that point I called about every 2 weeks to 1 month for another half year...nothing ever happened. I wasn't too happy...

110", max I'm comfortable using - 100" as I like to keep a couple inches of each section in the lower section for a little more stability
22.5"
~ a pound, no scales but the extension weighs less than the Manfrotto QRC it stays attached to
6 sections - ~19" each
5/8-27 fittings on each end

Sorry to read their customer service has declined so much. While I didn't order this new*, I have gotten a few spare locking screws for it. Quick response when I called, less than a week to have them in my hand. I couldn't be happier with mine and have even clamped it to my outdoor stand a couple of times for additional height. Sandbags or a well anchored stand a must when using both stand and extension.
* picked it up in the yard, it's the one just below the tape measure

Nice pic Ted
I have the same exact setup. I started using this to clamp to armrests in theaters
where stands just get in the way. A bonus is it all fits in a small backpack.

I just bought mine!! Thanks so much for the heads up it is exactly what I have been looking for!!

Another good use for this set up when I needed to extend the mics infront of a soundboard that was centered on a balcony.

for a website? no, at least I've never been able to find one; however if you want to look at non-custom extensions then click "shop online" and select the booms or go to http://estore.conceptheaven.com/clients/apic/estore/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=28 once there click the individual pics for the specs but it looks like there are no lower fittings in any of the booms I checked

I think that extension pole and clamp will work nicely for some table clamping (I've recently discovered some prospective venues that aren't sure about me bringing a stand). But will that clamp not in any way damage a table? Has anybody ever had a venue prohibit this use because of potential dents/scratches/anything that might be left behind?
-
I've had a couple places express concern over indentations. The first place wound up letting me clamp to a table after I asked to use a couple of coasters to place between the tabletop and the clamp. The second place I was prepared for. I now keep a few small squares of bulk cork gasket material in my bag so I won't leave any indentations. The gasket material is available in several thicknesses at most auto parts stores. A 12"x30" roll should cost between $5 and $10 depending on thickness. Or grab a few coasters next time you're in your favorite bar and keep them in your bag. Alternatively check your favorite arts&crafts supply store for some self-adhesive felt (a little thin for my liking) or rubber backing material (a better choice) and attach that to your clamp. You can also get creative, while in a local hobby store looking for RC batteries for my FR2LE, I noticed some track liner for model railroads. It resembled the gasket material I have but was about 3/16" thick and thinking back it would make a great pad for the clamp jaws.

I was trying to find this company online and all the links to their sites seem to be dead. A google search didn't turn nothing either...
I would also like to use some pole to mount my mics on but I am not sure how to connect my mics to the pole. I am a real beginner so I will really appreciate it if someone could tell me what is a possible way to connect my mics (CA-14) to a mic pole?
Thank you very much in advance.

try calling them - (800) 600 1147
if the links are dead, maybe someone will answer the phone; or try B&H for the extension mentioned
as for mounting them maybe someone with some CA14s will chime in

For a good start I'd talk to the folks at Sound Professionals. For CA-14s, refer to the other recent thread on here if you haven't already. The SP-GNA-3, which I use with some other comparable mics, should do the trick for you. Or, if you have clips, SP-GNA-2. Just make sure they provide a stud to screw into the top of the stand if the stand doesn't come with one (most stands do).
But the short answer as to what you need is:
Mics (you have)
Cables (enough to run on stand) - Sound Pros can do custom length cable for you too, as can Darktrain and Nick's Picks on here.
Stand - there are good Bogen knockoffs available on eBay for $50. Mine is 13.5' and works great.
Clamp/Pole - Sort of an either/or with stand. I find I clamp a lot and add a 7' Manfrotto pole because venues get less upset about clamps than tripod stands. For this you need a few more things (Bogen Superclamp, pole, short extension (sometimes), thread adapters)
Mount - as I suggested, the SP-GNA-3 is good for the type of small mics you're using
Stud - I may be misusing this term, but it's the gold-colored piece that inserts into the top of a stand that provides the thread onto which you screw the mount. Almost any stand you buy will have this.
Thread adapter - if your stud isn't 5/8' for the SP-GNA-2, you'd need to get an adapter. B&H Photo and Audio has those....
I'm not any huge expert on this, but I just bought all this stuff and have been using it successfully, so it's mostly fresh in my mind at least....
-
Thank you very much acidjack for the detailed answer.
After reading everything you wrote I think this will be the setup I will go with:
Mount - SP-GNA-2 mount (since I have the built in clips). Is it worth to add the shock mount for $35? Will it fit with this mount?
Stand - 13 feet is huge... you are probably be getting great recordings with such a big stand. Do you know what is the collapsible size of yours? I was thinking more in the direction of a smaller stand so it will be easier to carry and won't raise eyebrows with in the venues that I am going to. The clamp option won't be possible in most venues though because many of the concerts are outside. This is why I am leaning in the direction of a smaller light stand like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Westcott-750-Photo-Basics-7-0-Foot/dp/B000NIKQ7Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254412376&sr=8-1
The problem is I can't find any info about it so I am not sure what is the thread at the top of it and if it has the "stud" that you mentioned. It will really help me if you could add a link to one of the bogen knockoffs on ebay so I could compare them to some of the cheaper stands on Amazon.
Do you have both a light stand and an extension pole that you use is shows or you somehow connect you clamp to the folded light stand and use it as an extension pole?
By the way, if you have any photos of your setup, it will be great if you can upload them here so I could see what it looks like...
Thank you very much for your help.

7' IMHO is a total waste. That's barely higher than a person's head. You might as well wear the CA-14s if you are going to do that. Anything less than 9' is not going to cut out much crowd noise at all. Many people go less than 13' (I rarely extend that high) but 7' won't work generally.
Here's a 9-footer on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/TWO-Air-Cushion-Photo-Studio-Light-Stand-9-2-ft-SL806A_W0QQitemZ360192568751QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item53dd266daf&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Mine collapses down to being about, I dunno, 4.5' long or something like that. Pretty compact, and light. It has a stud on the end, but you probably will need a 5/8" adapter (most light stands aren't threaded 5/8"). Like this guy: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/286147-REG/AKG_KM217_3_8_Female_to_5_8_.html#
Do you have both a light stand and an extension pole that you use is shows or you somehow connect you clamp to the folded light stand and use it as an extension pole?
When I clamp I use this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546356-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_035RL_035RL_Super_Clamp_with.html#
note that it includes a stud.
and this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546540-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_099B_3_Section_Extension_Pole_35_.html#
and, depending on the angle of the clamp, this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/328938-REG/Smith_Victor_670142_8_Extension_Bar_for.html#
Generally, like I said, I find that venues prefer that you clamp to a balcony rail rather than use a stand. Just note, though, that it's helpful to have a shockmount for that SP-GNA-2 if you do that, because if an idiot bangs on the rail or makes a ton of vibration near the clamp, you will record it.
I also sometimes use the Matthews extension pole, which is shorter, and is a little easier to have stick out horizontally. It's shorter in overall height than the Manfrotto. The Manfrotto is up to 7' long, which means if you clamp it to a balcony that you assume is 3-4' high, you've got a solid 9-11' of extension there.
By the way, if you have any photos of your setup, it will be great if you can upload them here so I could see what it looks like...
I don't presently... I took some pictures of a clamp setup with my iPhone recently, but given that it was an iPhone photo, it looks pretty crappy.
-
acidjack, I can't thank you enough!!! You have gathered all the information I was looking for into one answer. Thank you so much!!!
I understand your point regarding the 7 ft. stand... I guess I will have to go with the longer one to get good results... By the way, do you take your setup with you to all the shows that you go to.
Sorry for asking, but this item:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/328938-REG/Smith_Victor_670142_8_Extension_Bar_for.html#
Do you need it so you will have the option to connect both horizontally and vertically?
Can you also tell me how do you connect you manfrotto extension pole to the super clamp? Do you use the thread on the stud that comes with the super clamp or the build in thread on the super clamp?
About the thread adapter - just to make sure I understand, at the top of the stand there is a 3/8" male thread and at the bottom of the mic mount a 5/8" female thread?

Do you think it will be a smart to add the SP shock mounts to the SP-GNA-2 for $35? Do you have any experience with these shock mounts and do you think they will work with the CA-14?
Cables (enough to run on stand) - Sound Pros can do custom length cable for you too, as can Darktrain and Nick's Picks on here.
Can you please give me a link to a male to female stereo cable from the SP site? I only found one that is 2 meters long and I don't think that would be long enough...
Thank you very much for all your help

Yeah, I gotta agree that this is a rather unfortunate thread title. haha

Do you need it so you will have the option to connect both horizontally and vertically?
Yes, you can use one of those extension bars vertically or horizontally. Though with a longer type one, the clamp may not be able to hold it as securely. I found the Matthews one could be held firm enough and still extended like 4' away from the balcony without stability issues (admittedly, with small mics on the end of it).
Can you also tell me how do you connect you manfrotto extension pole to the super clamp? Do you use the thread on the stud that comes with the super clamp or the build in thread on the super clamp?
Superclamp has a large opening in it. You stick either the L-shaped short extension into it and then connect the long extension pole to that (to run vertical) or, depending how the clamp is angled, the extension pole can be put into it directly.
I strongly recommend you search "clamp" or "extension pole" on TS.com. You will find lots of pictures of guys using clamps, how it looks, etc. Also, once you have the stuff in front of you, it's pretty intuitive.
About the thread adapter - just to make sure I understand, at the top of the stand there is a 3/8" male thread and at the bottom of the mic mount a 5/8" female thread?
I think that's right, yeah. There is another size, sometimes, but I believe 3/8" is the light pole standard. There are adapters for both kinds.
Do you think it will be a smart to add the SP shock mounts to the SP-GNA-2 for $35? Do you have any experience with these shock mounts and do you think they will work with the CA-14?
I haven't used that mount, I don't think, and I don't use one with my SP-GNA-2 as I have some other mounting options I can use as well as that... But I probably would get some kind of shock mount if you're planning to be clamped a lot to rails people can touch. It just happens that at most venues I go to the thing I clamp to is a rail by the SBD where people aren't banging on it and causing issues all the time.
Can you please give me a link to a male to female stereo cable from the SP site? I only found one that is 2 meters long and I don't think that would be long enough...
Odd, I couldn't find it this time either. I would email sales@soundprofessionals.com and see if they can do it for you. But again, if either of the guys on here - darktrain or Nick's Picks - can do it, they do high-quality work and their cables are pretty much designed for use by this community. I'm not sure if either does a stereo mini-F to stereo mini-M cable, but can't hurt to ask. Search on their names and you'll be able to find them to send a PM. I have some Nick's Picks cables that I bought off another TS.com user and they are extremely sturdy, high-quality gear.

I thought of a certain setup that will give me the option of using an extension pole both as a light stand and using the super clamp. I am thinking of buying this light stand base from Manfrotto:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546481-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_003_003_Backlight_Stand_Black.html
along with the super clamp and extension pole and then I have an option to mount both ways without carrying too much equipment. It has a pretty small footprint (23") and it lies flat on the ground (from what it seems). Please tell me what are your thoughts? I wasn't able to find any reviews on the web and I am not sure if this will be a good investment or just a waste of money. If there is a sturdier base that you know of and is not too expensive, I would love to hear about it.
Thank you in advance
-
Check this thread for some pics of a similar base in use.
http://www.taperssection.com/index.php/topic,100989.0.html
It isn't perfectly flat to the ground as some of the pics in that thread indicate but it's close.
A couple of other brands mentioned in the thread with links to other retails.
For size and portability it looks like it will be difficult to find a better setup.
A few posts in that thread reference posts which have been deleted so it reads a little strange but it still has pertinent information.
-
Here is a shot with the mathews pole and the base you mentioned. It's great for stage lip and onstage, but when fully extended I am not very confident in it's stability. Besides, when fully extended it maxs out at 50" (4.25 feet).
-
El referenceo.
-
I am now curious whether one could use that base with the somewhat longer Manfrotto extension pole that I have - which maxes at 7'. That would make a pretty nice little lowpro stand...

Funny you mention this as I thought the same thing when I pulled the trigger on this base (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/253077-REG/Impact_LS_3S_3_Back_Light_Stand.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/253077-REG/Impact_LS_3S_3_Back_Light_Stand.html)) and Manfrotto extension (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546540-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_099B_3_Section_Extension_Pole_35_.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546540-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_099B_3_Section_Extension_Pole_35_.html)) about a month ago. Finally got a chance to use this setup the other night and it was a mixed bag. Had it extended to about 6-1/2' with a set of sdc's on top and a pair of 414's hanging coincident off the front. While I didn't have any issues with it tipping over, I found it a bit wobbly and was concerned that if it built up sufficient momentum rocking back and forth it would tip. If you can isolate it from people brushing against it, it will stay put but it's FAR from Wookie-resistant; best to keep a close eye on it. That said, I will definitely use it again under certain conditions. If you'd like to try it sometime, let me know.

What would be a good clamp to use with a setup like the OPs to clamp onto a table or an armrest?
-
What would be a good clamp to use with a setup like the OPs to clamp onto a table or an armrest?
The one in the picture is a quick release clamp http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252212-REG/Manfrotto_649_649_Quick_Action_Release.html
-
The clamp pictured by the OP and the Super Clamp will both work (and others, I'm sure):
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252212-REG/Manfrotto_649_649_Quick_Action_Release.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5160-REG/Manfrotto_2909_2909_Super_Clamp_with.html
I've used both for this situation, but prefer the Super Clamp for most situations. And it's half the price. I imagine there are situations where the smaller "bite" of the Quick Action Release Clamp would be a benefit, but if you are a light packer this clamp is a beast and you'll definitely feel the weight of it. Regardless, make sure to pick up something soft to put between the jaws of the clamp so you don't damage whatever you're clamping to.
-
And I'm just the opposite - I prefer the Quick Release to the Super clamp. About the same weight (if anything the QRC is lighter) but the QRC opens wider and I find to be more versatile in what and how I can clamp to. One detriment is size - it is considerable but it also doesn't need too_easy_to_lose wedges to clamp well to a flat surface. If you can find one, the Rowi 103, which is also marketed as a Schoeps clamp, is a little smaller than the QRC and has a few other built-in options. Of those three, I use the QRC about 75-80% of the time I use a clamp. Even the Windtech "C" clamp gets more use by me than my Super Clamps.
-
Ouch, the quick action release is pricey! I'll probably end up with the superclamp. It's not a problem that the superclamp is meant for a pole? It will work on a flat surface?
-

There's a wedge included with the SuperClamp for just this purpose. When not in use, it clicks into a storage location, as seen in the lower left of this photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5160-REG/Manfrotto_2909_2909_Super_Clamp_with.html). And when in use, it drops into the wedge in the lower right of the same photo.
-
I have both the super clamp & the quick realease (I am a clamp slut) and prefer the quick release for tables, arm rests and flat surfaces in general. The super clamp doesn't always work the best on flat surfaces, depending on the thickness of the surface, in my experience. The super clamp rules on poles and balcony rails.
-
I see the opening on the super clam is up to 2-1/8". Anyone know the average thickness of an armrest or back of a chair? Or has anyone run into a problem with this? I don't plan on using the clamp a whole lot so the $54 for the quick release isn't something I really want to go for unless I absolutely have to.
-
Another reason I like the Super Clamp is my paranoia over damaging (or being accused of damaging) a nice table or whatever I'm clamping to. Since it has a much larger bite, it distributes the force much better. One problem with the Super Clamp -- get busy talking to somebody while you're opening it and it's easy to open it too far and have it basically fall apart on you (or am I the only one?). On at least one occasion I wasn't able to put it back together in the darkness.
Both are great, rugged clamps though.

All true. You really need both if you do much clamping, IMHO. The Super is way better for balcony rails, etc. but if you are clamping onto a horizontal surface like a table, it can be a little iffy to get the pole perfectly vertical, in my experience.

All true. You really need both if you do much clamping, IMHO. The Super is way better for balcony rails, etc. but if you are clamping onto a horizontal surface like a table, it can be a little iffy to get the pole perfectly vertical, in my experience.
Though I don't use it often, I've found the following has saved my ass on a couple of occasions. It came with a used super clamp and makes getting truly vertical a breeze even when the clamping position couldn't be considered ideal. Can be used with both the Super and QR Clamps.

What's the difference between the super clamp posted and this one? It appears to be the stud...is that a problem? What size do you need for the extension pole?

I can't find any differences, except for it being out of stock. The weight capacity is the same (33 pounds) and it looks to be identical functionally. And the reviews seem to give it a thumbs-up as a cheaper-but-just-as-good version of the name-brand clamp.
-
Besides price, the only difference I notice is the handle. Bogen/Manfrotto has a lever style where the clone has a T. Between those two options I would take the T as the lever sometimes runs into an obstruction if trying to clamp in a tight spot and you can't tighten the clamp enough to get a grip due to the lever running into an obstacle. There is a third option, an indexing lever handle where you can reposition the lever to get the clamp completely tight. Smith-Victor is one manufacturer of the super clamp who makes an indexing handle. There are probably others and even B/M may make one.
-
Right now, I'm going to buy:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5160-REG/Manfrotto_2909_2909_Super_Clamp_with.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/298908-REG/WindTech_MPC_10_Multi_Position_C_Type_Clamp.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546540-REG/Manfrotto_099B_3_Section_Extension_Pole_35_.html
But I'm not sure if I need an adapter to use the extension pole on the superclamp. Do I need anymore hardware?
-
The extension pole will slip right over the stud of the super clamp. You don't need anything else to make that work. What I WOULD recommend is one of these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546442-REG/Manfrotto_203_203_Extension_Arm_for.html
When clamping to something horizontal (a rail, a table, an armrest), the super clamp works great. But you could find yourself needing to clamp to something vertical, which orients the clamp in the wrong direction for attaching anything to. This little extension arm allows you to change the orientation.
-
Ok, thanks!
-
What flipp said ^^: I have S.C.'s from both manufacturers and if you can wait for it to come in, the Impact super clamp is identical except for the shape of the tightening handle and it's $10 cheaper.
On a side note, was in B&H the other day, played around with THIS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/354654-REG/Manfrotto_396AB_3_Double_Articulated_Arm_.html) and nearly creamed my jeans. Rock solid (supports 11lbs.), extends to 34", interlocking teeth so it doesn't slip, half-turn ratchet system to unlock it and lots of different ways to position it. Currently have no real use for an arm like this but might try to talk myself into one. ;D

I've got nothing of substance to add to this thread, just this comment: I think the title of this thread should be nominated for an award.
That is all.

After more searching, I found this clamp: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5192-REG/Manfrotto_2941_2941_Mini_Clamp_with.html
Anyone with experience?
I appreciate the help guys- I just want to make the best purchase for the money. Sorry if I'm nagging :-[
-
I like this clamp. It has a lot going for it. But, if I was to pick only 1 clamp, I really like the Ultraclamp, even better with some tapped mods...maybe I'll upload some photos. Nevertheless, the miniclamp is great for doing split omnis and you can put a homemade bar right through it.
-
When discussing clamps, I think it's important to differentiate based on usage. Not all clamps are good for all purposes. Some might be good for stand-clamping (UltraClamp, Windtech C, Mini Clamp), others might be good for railings and extension bars (SuperClamp, Quick Release Clamp).

What would be good for a seatback or armrest attached to an extension pole?

I agree with ted. Do you have a bogen extension?

I'm getting a manfrotto extension.

I'm stuck- I love the quick release clamp but its so expensive! Anyone know about how thick the average armrest is? The mini clamp only goes to 1-1/8' wide which may be too small? ???
-
I have the Matthews pole, a superclamp with extension arm, and the quick release clamp. Here's my thoughts:
I don't like the Matthews pole. The top section (part that screws, not the pole) cracked and while I was eventually able to get them to ship me a new part, they didn't replace the whole thing and now when fully extended, it leans off to the side a little. Eventually I will have one custom made for me from the folks at APIC. The Bogen one is way too long when fully closed for me.
I don't like the quick release clamp. It is very expensive and seems sturdy, but the brass ring on the end of the screw snapped off when screwing it to an arm rest at Great Woods last summer. I managed to bend it back on, but for the price, it should be more solid and I think this weakness is an overlooked design flaw. If you are screwing it to something completely flat like a table or bench, I'm sure its fine, but it is not good for uneven surfaces.
I really like the Superclamp. I use it all the time, but only with the extension arm and the Matthews pole. With all three pieces, there is always somewhere on the armrest or seat bracing that you can clamp to and then adust the angle of the arm to get the pole up in the air.
-
I've used the SuperClamp on armrests many times. How one mounts it depends on the thickness of the armrest. Sometimes I clamp directly to the width of the armrest. Sometimes to the edge (like clamping to a table). Sometimes to the vertical support base. The Bogen 203 Extension Arm for Mini Clamp (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546442-REG/Manfrotto_203_203_Extension_Arm_for.html) comes in handy for converting right-angle out of the clamp and also rotating around the long axis of the extension arm.
Update to add: The Bogen 042 Extension Arm works, too. But I find the 203 more versatile. The male end of the 203 that slots into the SuperClamp is rounded, so you may rotate the extension 360°. The 042 has a hexagonal end that doesn't rotate freely - it only provides for 6 fixed slots at 60° intervals.

Brian - your link goes to that model 203, which is the mini clamp arm. Is thatthe only one they make, or is the 042 you mention the same thing, but made for the superclamp system? Thx in advance.

Oops, I meant the 203. Both the 042 and the 203 work with the SC. I prefer the 203. See previous post for additional details.
-
Now is the stud on that extension removable? I found a superclamp on ebay- the same one without the stud. It'd be great to save a few bucks if I could use the stud on the clamp alone if I am not using the extension arm.

I'm looking into these two items but was wondering if I would need an adapter to connect them -
Clamp - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=298908&is=REG
Pole - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=546540&is=REG
Looks like the top of the clamp has a 5/8 - 27 thread, so i'm guessing that will be good enough for the bottom of the pole to connect to?

Your going to want a Superclamp preferrably with the standard stud (or a comparably tough clamp) instead of a windtech clamp to hold up the pole. The windtech doesn't have enough clamping force to hold up the pole.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546356-REG/Manfrotto_035RL_035RL_Super_Clamp_with.html
The combo of the pole you linked to and the superclamp above is what I use at the Neighborhood Theatre, Visulite Theatre and anywhere else where I can run a pole instead of a stand. The standard stud will lock into the superclamp and then can be secured into bottom of pole making for a very strong connection.
In fact, I've got an extra superclamp that I never use. $20 if you want.
-
The Windtech clamp for sure has a 5/8"-27 male thread. But I believe the extension pole has a female 5/8" stud, i.e. it's lacking threads. You would need an adapter to convert the clamp's 5/8"-27 male thread to a 5/8" male stud (unthreaded).
But bhadella is right -- the SuperClamp is a much better match with the extension pole. And I believe the standard stud included with the SuperClamp is a dual 5/8" male stud with a 1/4"-20 tip. So it would work with the extension pole, or with adapter(s) would also work for a standard 5/8"-27 female threaded mount.
-
Thanks for the replies. Got the clamp in hand and the pole ordered from b&h.

is there a stud (as pictured in that BH link) that comes with the extra sc you have?

ISO the Matthews extension pole - anyone selling? B&H is out.

Whether any of the following have it in stock I haven't checked.

awesome, adorama has it thanks!
Now I just need a screw top for it... 1/4" I think.
Needs to fit this on top:

If you want to thread something onto the pole itself, you need this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546490-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_014_38_014_38_Rapid_Adapter_.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546490-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_014_38_014_38_Rapid_Adapter_.html)
But the thread on that is3/8 so if you need a 1/8 then you will need a 3/8 to 1/8 adapter.
Instead of the adapters you could also clamp onto the pole.
-
I actually think I have that rapid adapter - but the screw is too big for my t-bar. I'll need a step-down screw adapter.
I have a clamp, too, but sometimes I use that for video. I'll get a 3/8 to 1/8. or is it 1/4?
-
crap, I need to check at home - I think I have this:

Just FYI to all, I ordered it from adorama because it was not listed as back ordered - bought it and everything, and just now got an email saying it is backordered. UGH. I'll probably cancel and just get everything from B&H.

Is there a reason you want the Matthews over the Bogen 099b? The Matthews is smaller, but the Bogen extends much taller. My experience with the quality and customer service of Matthews was a bit disappointing as well. I have both, but can't really ever see myself using the Matthews again.
-
I want the smaller one - I have a light stand if I need 13 feet. For clamping, it'll already be as high as the soundboard to start, and I just need something that will fit in my bag. Also, my mics are almost weightless, so strength isn't really an issue.
-
Should work fine then but be careful when tightening the sections. My top ring cracked while tightening and I wasn't cranking on it or anything. Plenty of people own this and have apparently not had an issue, so it was probably just an out-lier.
-
thanks for the info
-
FYI, I got my extension pole in today (with a manfrotto 90 degree adapter as well), and it's black not silver:

The 2nd ring on mine cracked last night. Still held, but disappointing since it's only ~6mo old. I think I'll try the Bogen.

I guess I don't tighten it too much. My mics weigh nothing.

Definitely didn't over tighten, it was approaching "firm" when I heard/felt the PING! My mics (AKGs) were fine last night fortunately, but for balcony clamping and hanging I don't think I'll risk it.

If you need something on the "shorter" end of the Matthews 429499 extension, I would recommend the Manfrotto 122B (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5359-REG/Manfrotto_122B_122B_Adjustable_Pole_for.html). Length is 21" to 33.5" and is very durable; I've had mine for a few years and beat the hell out of it with no issues. Can also be had with a base (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/325266-REG/Manfrotto_012B_012B_Backlight_Stand_with.html) for on-stage placement.

I think what FCB is recommending here is the non-generic version of the Impact gear I mentioned above. I would recommend manfrotto's base over the Impact one as it tightens better. I'm always a little scared the Impact one will come loose and turn unless I've taped it to something.

marking thread for future reference. good stuff in here. :)
-
Ted - In your pic at the beginning of this thread labeled drumstand, is that base stand-alone or did it come with an arm? I am looking to purchase a base like that but have no use for an arm.
-
I found the base alone in the clearance section of a guitar center
-
fyi mine also cracked a ring at some point. Still works but I'll probably replace it just in case.
-
Is is possible to link two Matthews extension poles? Guessing that can be done.
