Stand/Setup for Giant Squids
« on: March 21, 2006, 11:37:38 PM »
I plan on buying a pair of the Squids from a fellow TSer in the next couple of weeks, my next step is finding out how to mount them on a stand.

There are a few 12 to 15 foot light stands on ebay that im looking at, but i dont know if there are any kind of tbar's or that sort of thing to mount the squids.

Anyone have any experience with this and know the best way of mounting them and throwing them up in the air :)  :P

I plan on taping DMB, OAR, and other random shows...but mostly DMB...

Thanks to anyone who can help!

It all depends on what kind of dough you are willing to cough up.

A cheap fix is the following:

Take a ruler, drill hole to fit over the stand post, drill holes to thread the mini mics thru, and then use some sort of tape (duct, pro-gaff) to keep them up there.

They do in some cases.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I got a stand from ebay... it does the job, but it has a very large footprint.

I think AT makes a cheap T bar that will give you most configs... if you want to run XY though, you need some kind of spacer to lift one mic above the other so you can put the capsules right above one another.

Another option is the Shure A27 vert bar... its pricey, but pretty nice too.

If you're just running squids, I doubt the cable running from them to the bat box is really all that long.  I wouldn't bother getting a stand thats too high or else you might have some difficulty trying to figure out what to do with your actual recording device.

As for something to mounth them on.  I backup the make your own idea.  Its silly to drop a ton of money on a tbar made for full mics when in reality you'll just be taping/clipping your mics to them anyway.

If the squids are omni's, you might want to look into j-discs, nerf balls (for running binaural without your head), or some way that you can split them.  Just some ideas.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

I'm not sure what the size differences between the Sound Profressionals to the Giant Squids, but these work great.

maybe i'm misunderstanding the question, but couldn't you just get a flex bar and make any config you wanted? I just picked one up used for $20 so they are around

that may be the best thing....where can i find one?

and as for the stand...im going to be extending the length of the cables, so i plan to run at least a 15ft stand

thank you guys for all of the advice
