Looking for home made clamp thread
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:35:46 PM »
Can some one please link the thread where someone fabricated a manfrotto style clamp w parts for Home Depot? It cost less than $10.
Thanks.

Is this what you were thinking of?

$5

there is a hole in the metal bar at the end opposite of the clamp...thread a 1/4 16unc bolt and nut thru the hole and use normal taper adapters for microphones

Do yourself (and the audience below) a big favor and get a real Super Clamp.  They're only $30, are made to hold 5/8" studs to attach all kinds of lighting accessories like the Lowell pole you want to use, and will grip tighter than you would imagine on any flat or rounded fixed object.  Once you use one, you'll see that they're well worth the money and are the best tool for the job.

You also need a steel safety cable if clamping to railings - you don't want your stuff letting go and falling on people below.  Check the extensive threads on clamps bookmarked here for tons more info on this.

In contrast, the type of clamp you want to use might work OK on something flat, but will not be any good on a railing, nor will it be strong enough to support anything cantilevered out.  With a pole on it, especially mounted to a 1/4"-20 bolt through that hole, you're asking for trouble, IMO.  I have a few of those clamps and I would never use them for something like this.

Far out, man. Super clamp it is. I'm more interested in chair arms and railings, but not necessarily over the balcony. Safety lines would be used when needed.
I run CA-14 omni and cards together on a cpvc mount I made. It holds both pairs of mics nos and din with one shock mount. So it's pretty light weight.
I have been going over the clamp threads all summer so I can leave my stand behind this fall.

Yeah I used to have something similar to that.  Your mics and mount wouldn't be the issue, but the pole would - not so much it's weight, but even a slight bump might cause that bar clamp to slip.  Once you get a Super Clamp, you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.  Here's a picture from several years back of CA14s super-clamped to a stand holding some AKG C414s and Schoeps MK4/MK8s, to give you an idea of how that clamp may be useful without a pole.

Nice pic. How does the super clamp work on arm tests or other flat surfaces? Would the wedges help with this?

When it fits, the super clamp stays tight.  It doesn't lock on well to some seats with curves or if the surface is too thick.

I wouldn't use a squeeze clamp for anything but wood working.

I did this with a pair of Jorgensen clamps like 15+- years ago. I drilled thru the end of the clamp bar, to accommodate a 3/8-16 screw (about a large a screw as the clamp bar could handle). I don't use the clamps that often, but always carry them with me in my truck (one in my cack bag, and one in the truck).
There are two clamps in the picture, clamped to the 4x8 above the players. Each has an ADK A51TL as omni's mounted to it. You can see one mic by the light, and the other is obscured by the flag.

Jorgensen clamp:

The squeeze clamp on a square beam w a windtech clamped to the end of the bar is great for some venues I frequent.

The SuperClamp is a must IMO when using the Lowel Full Pole ;) And like Volt said, it will lock on there so tight and you'll feel much safer when recording! It is weird in some situations, but for round bars or other situations where it gets a good grip, then its ROCK solid!

If you get one, pretty soon you'll want a second for situations like this.

+T nice! And those WS8 screens look familiar ;) Glad they're still working out for you! And I would like to add a Matthelini[sp?] clamp to my collection as well, with the fixed jaw opening!
