How to do XY with T bar?
« on: April 13, 2009, 09:14:42 PM »
I have two Oktava MK-012s that I want to set up in XY. I've been looking at T bars, and I'm a little confused. When you mount two mics on the same level, how can you do XY? How can you make one mic higher than the other so that they aren't side by side? I'm looking at the Oktava brand T bar, and I don't see any way to raise one mic up. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks

You need a riser on one end.

The one I use I got off the shelf at a Guitar Center in the mic stand area.

Or get a 5/8>3/8 adapter and a 3/8>5/8 adapter and screw then together. That will get you a little over 1/2 inch rise. Put two sets of those together and you can X-Y most any pencil mics. That's what I have.

If the knobs at the end of your bar are 3/8 with an adapter on them up to 5/8, remove the adapter and get a 3/8X16 coupling nut at Lowes/Home Depot/etc. and a 3/8X16 stud. The screw the 3/8>5/8 adapter on the stud. That will also make a nice riser. It doesn't look fancy but will be perfectly functional.

The cheapest solution is to mount one mic on the under side of the T bar ;)

Maybe not cheapest but a Shure vertical bar is another solution.

Would that actually work? There wouldn't be too much distance between the mic capsules?

I am not a huge fan of XY but after reading post here and from the Oades forum I believe it would work. I use XY only when its real windy out side stage lip or bass heavy show at my local club but really feel other configurations suit my ears better. For my T-bar I use this:

Here is a picture of me running XY at 110 degrees stage lip
