Help required with mic placement in small venue.  Low ceiling, room mixed in stereo.  There is a bulkhead about 10 feet back from the stage.  I can clamp to the center of this bulkhead, and presumably run whatever configuration I want (ortf, din, xy, etc).  Or, the house sound tech has drilled into the bulkhead (from below) two mic mounts (essentially the top piece from a mic stand), which I can screw my mic clips/shockmounts onto.  These mounts are directly in line with the left and right main (hanging from the ceiling) speakers.

Please see the photos here:

Photo #4 shows the stage with the left speaker clearly visible, and the right speaker at the top right corner of the photo, near the wall.  Walking backwards from there we would see the bulkhead.  Photo #11 shows a view from about 3/4 of the way back (back right corner of the room).  (The photo seems to be taken from the back right corner, facing the front left corner.)  You can see both speakers and the stage.  In line with the left speaker is a brick post.  The first mic mount is immediately next to this post (under the bulkhead).  The second mount is in line with the right speaker.  The great thing about using these is that the house tech has a permanent cable run from these mounts back to the sbd area, so I wouldn't need to run cables.

I am running AKG480's, by the way.  Cards (although I have hypers as well) > Tascam DR-680.  No V3 for the time being.

So, on to the questions at hand:

1)  Tape from back by the board?  No good.  I tried this last week, and even though there was no one sitting near the mics, I picked up more crowd noise (specific talking) than ever before at any other venue.

2)  Mount from the center of the bulkhead with a clamp?  If so, what configuration would you use, being so close to the stage/speakers?  Also, I would technically be clamping to a small horizontal piece of metal jutting out from the bulkhead itself, so I'm concerned about vibrations.

3)  Use the pre-installed mounts and point one mic at the left speaker and one at the right?  Since these are cards and not shotguns, what should I do in terms of mic direction?  Point slightly away from the speakers?  Would you point "in" or "out"?  In other words, for the left mic, would you point "out" to the left of the speaker (thus away from the left side of the stage (stage right, I know!), or would you point "in" towards the center of the stage?  And how far in/out would you point?

Thanks to all, I'm looking forward to your responses.  I'm doing three shows (same artist) on three consecutive weeks, so I figured I would tape at the board for the first week, and then do whatever the community thought best for the next two weeks.  I'm also getting a board feed.  In fact, I can get whatever tracks I want from the board.  I took the main feed only for the first week, and the house guy suggested giving me lead vox, backing vox, and main out for next week.

Sidebar question 4:  Mic the stage?  (Well, just in front of the stage.)  I might do this if I go for a fourth week, however I need to sort out questions 2-3 so I'm prepared for any future shows I tape at this venue.  If I record from the stage-front, what feeds would you take from the board?  Vocals only as suggested?  Vocals and drums?  Sax mic?  There's some sax on half the songs, but not too much.  Mostly this is a rock-type drum/bass/lead guitar/keys band, with some guests on rhythm/second guitar, sax, etc.

Thanks again,

Matt

I run hypers/DINa in just about every situation possible, and 99 out of 100 times pull a good/great recording. If DINa wont work, the point the mics at the stacks :)
