fieldrecorder recommendation?
« on: April 13, 2017, 05:57:55 AM »
hi there,

i am searching for a field recorder that is portable, lightweight, has decent sound quality, and good battery life.
i know the sony pcm-m10, and it ticks all boxes, but i can not get hold of one anymore.

which field recorder would you recommend instead? is the zoom h2n any good?

(apologies if that question has been asked many times before)

thanks ;-)

oh, interesting!! here in europe (UK) it is not available anywhere anymore...
i was about to order it from that link, but then amazon added a massive import/export tax on top of it. so i had to skip it. was just too expensive;-(

This is out of stock, hence the 1-2 month lead time

Amazon frequently doesn't update product listings that are discontinued and leaves them in this limbo  - chances of getting one from Amazon is about 0%

ah ok, that sounds more like it. damn.

ok, back to the original question then: are there any 'comparably good' recorders out there that anyone can recommend? ;)

For portable field recordings I own and have compared a number of recorders, and don't think about taking anything other than the Sony PCM-D100 now. The low noise floor makes it the best portable recorder for capturing quieter ambiences ... for a price of course. Having said that, it seems to be offered at cheaper prices now and I acquired my second unit for just £300 GBP recently, which is what many people are trying to sell the M10 for.
Mics: Sennheiser MKH 8040, Sennheiser MKH 8020, AT BP4025, AT 853 cards, CA CAFS, CA 14 Omnis, CA 11 (Cards + Omnis), Soundman OKM II Classic

Roland r-05.

Better than the M10 for so many reasons.

Apart from the cool design and the battery life, I never understood the whole M10 fluffing that's going on on TS to be honest.

But hey, that's my opinion. :)

agreed!

A close second could be the Marantz PMD 620MKII.

Do you have a Marantz PMD 620MKII?  Did Oade mod it for you?

I do have the PMD 620 MKII, and also the PMD 661. Neither are modded. I have not found the need at all on the PMD620, and I only use the PMD 661 as a bit bucket, so the mod would have no affect. (or effect for that matter  ;D)

No you don't.
You need to buy one, a battery pack and some mics and start taping.

What are going to do with it?  Are you using internal mic's or external?  The R-05 and Marantz 620mk2 are good choices.  if you need phantom power, XLR line level inputs, digital input, and mini jack w/ plug in power I'd check out the Tascam DR100 mk3.

it would mainly be used with internal mics only. for all kinds of field-recordings on travels. I like the r-05's (and the pcm-m10's) design, since it doesn't immediately look like a recorder. good for stealth recordings :-)

Thanks for all the replies. I managed to find a used pcm-m10 online, and will stick with that now. (hope it wasn't a scam).  I cancelled the order I made for the Roland r05.

thanks for the help, this is a great forum!!
