MixPre-6 & Dropouts
« on: April 01, 2018, 01:40:59 PM »
There is only 1 approved card for the mp6, but I have not heard of anyone else posting about this issue.  I have seen some discussion in the MixPre thread, but that isso large it is hard to find specifics on this particular problem.  This has happened each time I have used the MP6.  It is not a total loss of signal but the volume is so low that is barely audible.   In order to bring it inline with the rest of the track I have to add 45+dB.  It is present in all tracks & channels.

MP6 Firmware 1.53 build 6

The cards I have used:
128gb SanDisk Extreme Class 10 90mb/s SDXC - dropouts present
Thursday at NMAS:
channel 1 & 2 mic in
channel 3 & 4 mic in
no mix

Friday at Dead Affect
channel 1&2 mic in
channel 3&4 line in
mix track was recorded

64gb SanDisk Ultra Class 10 micro SDXC /w adapter - dropouts present
Saturday night test
channel 1&2 mic in
channel 3&4 line in
channel 5&6 line in
mix track was recorded

Saturday was just a test in my office, I ran all channels & the mix using the 64gb card to see if the problem could be recreated.  It was.  All of the folks I have talked to have not had this issue.  The two cards I have used have not been used by other folks as far as I know.  I ordered some new 64gb SanDisk Extreme Pro Class 10, but was left worrying when I looked at the test files from last night.  I thought it may be an issue with the size of the card, that was the reason for the test with the 64gb, but that is another card that has not been used by people i have talked to.  The next test I am going to run is on a 32gb SanDisk Ultra Class 10 SDHC.

I have ordered replacement cards and purchased SanDisk Extreme PLUS 64GB SDXC UHS-I/V30/U3/Class 10 Card with Adapter (SDSDXWF-064G-ANCIN), but would like to hear what kind of cards you have been using with success.  I'd also like to know what cards you have not had success with yet.  The approved media for the mp6 on the Sound Devices is their own card.  I would like to see a more comprehensive list, and if we have to create that list, I think it would be beneficial to all parties.

Why not go with the approved SD card?

It's on the way, but I would like to be able to use a larger card for longer days.  There are people out there not using the Sound Devices card, I'd like to know what folks are using.

I have used a Sandisk Extreme Pro 128GB and 63 and 32GB Sandisk Extremes for quite a while and have not had any problems (other than the early firmware bug preventing use of cards greater than 32GB). I normally record four channels, no l/r mix at 24/48. I just recorded 13 shows in the last month with the 128GB with no issues.

What are you recording at - 24/48, 24/96, etc as that is also relevant. And how are you powering - USB-c by any chance? Sandisks are excellent cards. I would think the write speed of cards is more important than whether they are SD approved.

I record at 2496.  I am using the stock cable that came with the mp6 and have that plugged into an Anker Powercore+ 26800.  I was thinking today that it could possibly be a power issue, so I have another test running using a different battery.  I haven't used any of the "Pro" sd cards.  The cards I have been using have all been Class 10.

My guess is its a power issue. Using the stock cable is the weakest powering option in my opinion. I would test using the 4 or 8 battery sled to see if you get the dropouts

I think you are right.  I forgot that I recorded a show last week and I used a usb c > usb c cable.  I had no dropouts.  I feel like kicking myself in the ass now.  I am still testing, just to make sure.

I streamed five shows in a row using the Mixpre's USB-a port, only to discover my recordings were 24/44.1. At first I thought maybe using the USB-A audio interface locked recordings to 44.1. I realized later I simply hadn't set the mixing program on the ipad side to 48 and that if I had done so, my recordings would also be 24/48.  :banging head: Nothing is easy...

Well, its either a card issue or powering issue IMO!

Ive also used a 128gb Sandisk Extreme Pro for almost a year now, with ZERO issues, recording with 4 channels of PHANTOM + 2 MIX Tracks [L+R] [so 6 channels total], all @24/96! Id suggest using the same 128gb SanDisk Extreme Pro sd cards like Rippleish20 and I have been using with zero issues. Sounds like your SD cards can't keep up with the massive amount of data being written by 6 channels @24/96!!!

Id also suggest buying this Anker USB C cable, as its also all I've used with my MP3 & MP6 and Anker Powercore+ 20,100mah USB C Batteries, and haven't had any problems ;)

Anker USB C Cable [3.1gen] with 60w capable of Power Delivery!

Remember, when buying expensive things, don't go cheap on the smaller items either, like the recording media and powering cables ;) 8)

EDIT: Also, I would recommend sticking with SD Cards and NOT Micro SD Cards! I had the same issues a few years back with my DR-70D's. They did NOT like micro sd cards, but worked great with SD Cards :)

It was a power issue.

I was using the cable that came with the mixpre with an anker powercore+ 26800.  I did a few tests over the weekend.  Whenever I used the Sound Devices cable with the Anker 26800 battery I had the drop outs.  Using the stock cable with another battery, or using the anker usb c > usb c cable I had no issues at all.

Curious issue. Just to chime in here, I’m using an anker powercore+ 26800 as well with my mixpre-6 and a 64-gig Sandisk sd card. I am using the 3A USB-C out of the battery with an Amazon USB-C to USB-Ccable to power my Mixpre-6, and I have zero issues with dropouts; running the most recent firmware (I believe it’s 1.54?).

Edit: I’ve also run 2 channels and 4 channels with zero dropout issues.

I have found that i dont get dropouts with the usb-c > usb-c.  Could you test the stock sound devices cable with the 26800?  I would be interested to know if you have the same dropouts.

Hey, yeah I can try to test it next chance I get but I can’t promise that’ll be anytime soon at the moment.

Edit: just remembered, the default cable may not work because on the powercore+ the max amperage out of the two USB 2.0 ports is 2.4A max combined, and the Mixpre-6 may need 3 amps. The USB-C output on the powercore+ I believe delivers 3 amps.
