EAC RANSOME WARE ALERT?
« on: May 03, 2018, 07:32:26 PM »
In my quest to figure out the tagging issue described in another post this thread, I was in EAC and clicking around. I went to the HELP pull-down, cause I need help, and clicked on the Internet Links | SatCP EAC Tutorial options.

I was immediately assailed with a large pop up and a audio track blabbing about my clicking on some porn related site, pointing me to the phone number to call before I shut down or they were going to lock up my computer. I didn't jot down the phone number... pretty dumb of me.

I hit the power off immediately, rebooted and went off line. I'll see what transpires.

Anyone else see something like this from the EAC help?

Weird.

Good question. Could go either way, although the couple times I got those “alerts” last (maybe a year ago) they didn’t do a thing. If they do, there’s a method for recovery booting off a usb drive. At any rate, update you anti virus and do some scans.

I have one of these...it's freaking awesome for the most part.

I do have some issues where I have to disable it because a site won't run (WatchESPN comes to mind)...but you just disable it for 5 minutes (it will restart in 5 minutes) and you're good to go.

In my experience it's a standalone thing.  You get a Raspberry Pi, set it up with the pi hole stuff, connect it to your network, and then it just sits there and does its thing.  No need for a monitor or keyboard/mouse.  The things are tiny and using almost no power.

Oh. What if I don't "own" the wifi network, can a poor boy still win?

Oh. What if I don't "own" the wifi network, can a poor boy still win?

Do you "own" your laptop or workstation (i.e. do you have "local admin" rights)? Or is it a "managed" computer provided by your company IT?

Quote
Configure your router’s DHCP options to force clients to use Pi-hole as their DNS server, or manually configure each device to use the Pi-hole as their DNS server.
https://pi-hole.net

Looks like the pi-hole software acts like some sort of DNS proxy.
So,
  • if your Raspberry PI (or any other Linux box) on which it is installed has access to the internet and
  • if you can modify the DNS settings of your operating system,
the "poor boy can still win".

FWIW: I've just installed it on my Cubietruck and it's pretty straightforward.

The only issue was that it uses the ports 53 and 80 (for lighthttpd) by default. If you already use a different web server (like httpd or nginx), port 80 might already be in use. Which means: you might have to change the port in the lighthttpd config file in order to have access to the web administration console.

I should have said, "poor boy idiot". At the risk of hijacking my own thread with Pi hole talk. I'd be interested in this if I could impliment it under these conditions.

1. With management's consent, I sniff the building's wifi whoes router is just opposite my bedroom wall. No hope of getting access to it.
2. I have a lappy with Mint installed.
3. I'm pretty much in need of step by step instructions for installing this.

Thanks for all the info, though. I might change the heading of this thread if folks think it has legs.

In fact, pi-hole will run on your laptop. However, the laptop would have to be "always on" (24/7) if the whole setup is to make sense. I.e. to protect any pc in your home network including those running on Windows. (The whole thing started with eac, right?)

So, as heathen already suggested, you'd want something like a Raspberry PI: A cheap system on a chip with low TDP that can be used in "headless" mode (=with no monitor attached - once sshd has been configured).

Now, setting up a Raspberry Pi is easy. The difficult thing is to harden it against attacks from the internet. Remember the thing will be always on, and there are a lot of script kiddies and criminals who have nothing better to do than running some automated scans against everything that looks like an IoT device.

Long story short: I've got a Pi at home that I've set up as a torrent box and an automated FM recorder earlier this year. That box has already been hardened. In theory, if you were to buy the same model (Rpi 3B), you could use a clone of my micro-SD card and just reconfigure the firewall rules and your network settings. Some stuff like the video hardware acceleration licences might not work because of the unique device id. So you'd have to acquire these licenses again, if you need them.

Once, the thing is up and running, you adjust your network settings (DNS respectively DHCP server settings) on your laptop or your Windows pc to point against the ip address og your raspberry pi. Simples...
