Anyone ever recorded AC/DC shows?
« on: September 08, 2003, 09:35:39 AM »
Hey guys,

I just got into recording shows.

I tried to record the AC/DC gig on the 17/06/2003 in Munich, Circus Krone. The recording went really worse, because it was too loud for my mic or my recorder.

I used:

Sharp MD-MT20 (MD-Recorder)
Sony ECM-DS70P (Microfon)

Has anyone of you ever recorded an AC/DC shows? If yes, what equipment did you use and what was the quality of your recording like?

I'm really looking forward to your answer, because I'm going to upgrade my equipment.

get a better mic, no offense but the DS70P is a piece of shit.  That thing just cannot handle the sound pressure levels.

what type of microphones are you looking to buy? omni, cardiod, stealth? Please let us know how much money you are looking to spend also and I'm sure many people will post their ideas.  Welcome to the boards and +T for taping

totally welcome to the coolest site on the net.  this site has been the best thing for tapers since the inventions of DATs.   as schwilly said get a better mic.  look into SPL levels when buying, most condensors are ok, but others handle higher than others.  its important so you don't get overloaded tapes.
AKG 391's > phantom boxes > JB3 or Casio DA-7
Panasonic WM1610 omni's > whatever

Playback: Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum > Onkyo TSDX595 > matched Oynix Rockets > Mirage FRX-S8 sub

Hey dude, welcome.
^^^ What they said.
Too bad you didn't get a good recording. From the recordings I've heard, AC/DC rocks the house live...

Hi,

thanks for your posts.

Yeah, they really do. Write me an email if you're looking for something AC/DC related, I've got loads of live shows recordings.  ;)

About the mic:
I bought the microfon, because I read on the net (I haven't found this page before) that it is good for taping live shows etc., but as you told me it seems to be not very good for that.

Good question, I don't really know the difference between them.  ???

I thought of getting a new MD-Recorder (Sharp MD 899 with USB-port), do you think this thing is good? What mic do you think fits to this recorder?

My questions might be a bit simple for you, but I'm new to recording and I'm just learning the "basics"  ;)

My advice is to upgrade your microphone before you upgrade your MD recorder.  Some options for microphones to consider...

AT831/853 with a battery box
Dynamic Audio microphones
Sonic Studio DSM/6s
DPA 406x

please let us know how much you are looking to spend as there are many options

I would say 300 Dollar max for a new mic.

i would look into the sound professionals at series mics i.e. 853, 933's

i used a set of 933's for awhile and wish i still had them around to stealth with

these are the "at933s" and you can get a battery box with bass rolloff and you would be right around your 300 dollar mark

I'm living in Germany and just checked many online-stores here, but nobody sells the Sound Professionals microfons (if somebody know a german online shop, please tell me).

What about Sennheiser? I read a lot of good reviews for their mics on this site. Sennheiser are available in Germany too.

Call Sound Professionals in the United States and ask if they will ship overseas for you.

Call Sound Professionals in the United States and ask if they will ship overseas for you.

I asked them, and they will.

I checked out some other SP-mics, but I don't really get the difference of following products:

SP-CMC-14
SP-CMC-10
SP-CMC-8

I'm going to record Rock and Metal concerts (AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motörhead etc.) with the mics.

Thanks for your help.  :)

the biggest difference is the polar patterns

SP-CMC-14 is a Sub-cardiod polar pattern
the 10 is a hypercardiod pattern

you want the SP-CMC-8, it's a straight cardiod pick-up and will be most useful to you.  Make sure you get the Battery Box with switchable base-filter.

Thanks Schwilly, I also found a grafical example for the polar pattern thing.

So, I decided to order:

SP-CMC-8
 microfon

with Audio Technica mini rotating clips

SP-SPSB-1
 Battery Pack

with adjustable bass roll-off
with dual slider level controls
no hindged lid
no preamp
no ac power adapter

Any objections? Otherwise I'll place the order.
