outdoor config questions for austin next weekend
« on: September 27, 2003, 12:14:51 PM »
ok so i'm interested in trying some new stuff for panic next weekend in austin.  only the second time out with the LD's and first time at 24bit.  they'll be plenty of other rigs there so this is a good chance to experiment.  i think one night i'd like to run subcards NOS and one night m/s.

for the third night, i'm thinking of either doing blumlein, spaced omnis (assuming i can get a second clamp in time) or trying critically spaced omnis (6-8 inches, 180 degrees).  now i remember reading on this board that you can't really do critically spaced omnis with large, dual diaphragm mics...is this true and why?  i also know that blumlein will roll off the low-end but that's not necessarily a bad thing with panic sometimes.  will blumlein be really adversely affected by trying it from the section?  i've never been to the backyard so i don't know what the setup is.  from tapes i've heard from years past, spaced omnis is a reliable way of pulling great tapes there.

what do you all think on what i should try that third night?  thanks.

i'm gonna do the j-disc at some point, but probably not for this trip.  that sucks about the critically spaced omnis, i love listening on headphones and that would've been a treat.  i'll try it out sometime to see if i can also thumb my nose at the naysayers...jason, i may take you up on that offer, are you around tomorrow or this week? maybe i'll shoot out to maryland's capital and we'll go grab a beer or something.

what do i need, some hard foam or plywood,

Be prepared to give up your first born for some plywood right now... Geez, I went to 84 lumber yesterday to get the plywood for the cabinets I'm making for the garage and it cost me nearly what oak plywood cost me 2 weeks ago for the bench cabinet I made for our bedroom.  Of course I was glad to be rid of my 5 YO. ;-)
