Latest (just released) version of Audacity offers real-time preview for VST, LADSPA and AU effect plug-ins. Also works on a couple native Audacity effects...Have only fiddled a bit with it, but this is a significant improvement...http://betanews.com/2015/03/30/audacity-adds-real-time-effects-preview-updates-noise-removal-tool/

I just knew, if i'd wait around long enough...........niiiiice

Does this include real-time EQ?

Does this include real-time EQ?
This is my question too. I upgraded today before work but didn't have a chance to play with it to see if EQ could be done in real time vs the 30 second preview.

i agree, finally!
as far as real-time EQ goes, i am pretty sure that the standard audacity EQ will NOT work for this version (there are only a couple native audacity effects that support real-time at this stage)...however, any non-native, VST plugins or other plugins should work for real time (of which there are many). I tested real-time last night with the C3 Multi-band compressor plug-in and it worked perfectly.
If anyone can recommend a good free EQ plugin I would love to hear about it.
They also updated the look of the main front-end of Audacity...

regarding real-time EQ...did a bit of research on free VST graphic EQ plugins which will work within Audacity and be useable for the new real-time feature...and this is the one that i am going to try initially...people generally seem to like it: Voxengo Marvel GEQ

I would suggest a parametric EQ rather than a graphic FWIW

It works great. Gonna be so much easier. I know I need to learn Reaper but for now, at least, I can actually hear what I'm doing while I'm doing it! Thanks for the heads up and the links. Much appreciated!

Here's the free Voxengo VST effects I'm trying out.....so far, so good.

Is there a parametric EQ plug in?

I'm not sure about free ones. I use the EQ section from izotope Ozone.

There are many free parametric eq plugins. This is a good starting point/resource: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2011/03/03/bpb-freeware-studio-best-free-parametric-equalizer-vst-plugins/
Also check this one out, these guys seem to have a few very well thought out plugins: http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-vos-slickeq/

So what's the consensus on what's a good EQ plugin for Audacity? I checked out one but would like to further this discussion what people like most,
TYIA!

Yep, I'm still interested in this as well!

For applying light EQ, my goto is TDR SlickEQ. Free and extremely clean to my ears. If you read up on the technology behind any/all of the TDR plugins (all are free, and also have "gentlemen's editions" which are inexpensive w/ some added bells/whistles), they seem to value transparency and a lack of distortion above all else in their work. They also provide great users manuals laying out not only how to use the stuff, but the logic and some of the math/theory behind it. These guys are legit. I also checked around other forums and their team of developers and plugins seem highly regarded, in terms of clean sound and no artifacts if that's what you're aiming for.
The slick EQ is really only three-bands (3.5 if you include the high pass filter), but again, for the type of eq i usually do this works. There's a good deal of control and variables you can control, different EQ models, and various output stages (from linear/transparent to extra layers of harmonics). I love it. Their Kotelnikov compressor allows you to do NY Compression or parallel compression quite easily too.
The game changer that real time effects in audacity has done for me has been great. I don't really have the time/effort to learn a full DAW from scratch, i can do everything i need to in audacity so am a happy camper. Good luck and let me know what you think.

Sorry, here's the link to the TDR plugins: http://www.tokyodawn.net/tokyo-dawn-labs/

The slick eq looks perfect, I'll have to give that a try. Thanks!

If you must EQ, do like Sloan, and learn to carve with a parametric. If you are still getting the hang of it, you can put the graphic in, find your approximate frequency, then switch over to your new love (the parametric) and dial it in. So simple, and so good once you figure it out. Each EQ band has three controls - the center frequency, the gain +/-, and the width control, often called "Q," where higher "Q" is a narrower filter, lower Q is wider. Q of 1 is 1 octave wide, Q of 2 is 1/2 octave wide... it's a reciprocal relationship, so Q= 0.5 makes the filter two octaves wide.
I'm looking forward to a mini-mastering-suite of multiband compressor and a fairly transparent hard limiter. A lot of what you think might need EQ can be solved with careful use of the multiband...

Morst- if you're looking for a multiband compressor with EQ, give this a try. Pretty cool/flexible and from what i've seen (which is very limited), seems pretty unique. Price is right, too.

I enjoy this developer's other plug-ins too, worth checking out. His "Limiter no6" is basically 5 limiters in one, from basic compression to peak limiter to hard limiter, and more. Think of it as separate modules and it won't seem so complicated...https://vladgsound.wordpress.com/plugins/limiter6/
Enjoy

Just as an update I've been using Slick EQ & have been very pleased with it. I'm sure there are better ways to use it but for me it has been quick & easy, can't recommend it enough.

That is the one I have been messing with too, carlbeck.

Have you guys seen or tried the Reaper's ReaPlugs VST FX Suite in Audacity yet, especially ReaEQ? I installed it and messing with it today and a little easier controls (sliding bars).
