Question about battery power for High sierra this year.....
« on: January 13, 2004, 11:14:36 PM »
I was curious how can you tape as many bands as possible with out  hauling a car battery with you. Was there any power supply available in the past?
I am running NiMH 2100mAh AA's for my D8 and I will be getting  2  9.6V, 3000mAh NiMH Battery Packs  to run my Edirol UA5 and my mic is battery powered (1 AA). Any tips on how you can recharge at the show?
                                  Thanks

I usually befriend a vendor or RV camper for AC access.  Pretty darn easy if you offer to send even a single set their way post-festival.

for your D8, you can build a Radio Shack 4-D Cell sled (6Volts total) for about $5.00. 4 Duracell D cells will run you around $5 or so. the sled will EASILY power your D8 over 15hrs.

You can get a power inverter for 30 to 60 bucks & charge them in your car. That's what I do.

Is there one set up I can use to power both the D8 and the UA5?

Not that I am aware of. The UA-5 takes 9V while your D8 takes 6V. When I taped at High Sierra or at Hornings Hideout in the past I had a smaller 6V 4.0AHr SLA for the D8 and a few 9.6V 1800NiMH packs for my UA-5. When the NiMH packs for the UA-5 gave out I had built a small battery sled for my UA-5 that would use AA Alkiline cells such as the previous posting did for the D8. The nice trick here is that the AA's are cheaper than the D cells and I could get at least 4~5hrs out of them with ease!! Building a SLA that will power both will be a bit tricky but IS possible. I'm sure someone out has, but I have yet to see a SLA power a D8 & UA-5 off of one SLA or NiMH. I do know there are certain SLA vendors (VERY expensive) who do build such a SLA but for the D7/D8 and 12V V3 or MMe - so it can be done.

I would go with Alkalines or sweet talking a vendor or RV camper with AC access. THis year I plan on going with the power inverter in the car to charge the SLA for my V3 and D8. That seems like the way to go. Just my .02....

Thanks guys I thought I might be able to pursuade someone to let me charge at a campsite or an rv. I think I am going to bring an inverter just to make sure.

If you had in inverter for your car, would that mean you'd have to leave your car on all night???

No not at all. Start the car from time to time. My car battery hasn't gone dead yet.

You can get inverters that hook right to the car battery or plug in the cigarette lighter.

We keep a fan on while sleeping & charging batt. I do carry jumper cables just in case though.

How long do you think it would take to get a full charge on a 9.6V 3000mAh NiMH Battery Pack with an inverter?
