Audacity (bitrate)
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:03:21 PM »
I tracked four 24bit shows with Audacity and checked it with MediaInfo (https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo) now and it seems to be 16bit.  What did I do wrong in Audacity?

Here are archive links to the recordings...

One thing that gets me is forgetting to switch back to 24 bit as I'm exporting. It remembers the last choice you made. Maybe that's it?

I've never changed it and don't know how to.

I was going to be starting a thread about how to dither with Audacity but I guess it did that on its own when I thought I uploaded the 24 bit recordings.

Audacity should automatically recognize the bitrate.  I've never had a 24 bit recording automatically dithered down to 16 bit without rendering it that way.

When you export the file double check what the settings are.  Or could you have possibly recorded in 16 bit by mistake?

Audacity recognizes the project rate, but unless you set Edit > Preferences > Quality to "Dither - None" it's going to automatically dither when you export.

I know for sure it was 24bit

I load 24 bit / 48kHz files into audacity, work on them, and then to export the updates I leave the sample rate at 48kHz and then choose File > Export with "other uncompressed" as the format. To go to 16 bit at that point (or switch back to 24) I choose "Options" and "16 bit unsigned".
