Apogee owners...Protective box
« on: May 21, 2004, 11:34:37 AM »
Just feeling around for some interest here, I've contracted a biulder and he wants to know preliminary numbers on how many boxes we might need so he can get a accurate quote on prices.

This will be made from another box design...todd e or tad...dont know which. Probably todd's cuz I hear his is a little stealthier if thats possible :P

for the 500 and 1000? or mme? is it worth screwing with for the old units, and why would you need one for the mme? the only issue with the mme is sitting on cables, and I think a nice foam backing would solve that one. But I've run mine in a bag for two years, no issues.

Wood is heavy my friend. I would consider using lighter materials. Consider composites......they very light and tough as hell (although higher in cost).

Formed AL housing with a rubberized coating would also be a good choice. AL is a cheap, durable material, easy to form and can be coated with various protective coatings.

anyone who's ever made one for their ad500 / ad1000 will tell you that lumber is not sold in "exactly" the dimensions listed  ;)

1" X 6" per home depot = .75" X 5.25" per reality = the exact dimensions needed (what are the odds of that ?)

let's pick some nice wood, sturdy enough to be stood on by a big tapir! and light enough to offset the 12v weight.  a bird's eye maple or a nice heartwood cherry would rock.

I was thinking cedar...anything to help the smell in your average crowd :P

A coupla questions...

Weren't these things made of wood to dissapate heat as well as create an open air space around the unit?

Is the minime the same size as the ad500/1000?

Im pretty sure the wood is more for protection and keeping the 15 pin and XLRs from getting squished when running the ad-1000/500 upright.

Also Im pretty sure the mini-me is quite a bit smaller than the ad-1000/500.

Make sure you drill plenty of holes in the wood when youre finished. After I made my box, I bought a 1" drill bit from Home Depot for super cheap and put about 10-15 holes all over it for ventilation.

So thanks to Frank the Carpenter we have a new line of protective boxes for your apogee AD1000 and AD500e.

Here's the box todd e sent me, original design
top view...nice sticker todd

bottom view...notice the set screws for holding the unit in place

inside view...the apogee slides in the slot face first until it bottoms out, if the apogee was in the box you would nbe looking at the xlr's 15pin etc

top view...if you look closely, the slots end about an inch or so from the top so the knobs are recessed in the box for protection
i'm having problems with this pic...

pics of new box to come

Here's the new box for that ass. Well vented for cooling, and strong. When i went to get it I layed i on the ground and stood on it from all sides 8)

front view...you can see where the slots end on both sides, the faceplate of the apogee touches the sides, and the knobs are recessed below flush with the top

side/top view, frank added some slots in the sides for better cooling

bottom view, holes will have to be drilled to hold unit in place 2 for ad500 1 for ad1k, the units have different mounting holes, you can really see how thick it is in this one

botom view..same as last bottom view, you would be looking at xlr's, 15 pin, etc

thats about all i have right now, jeff might be able to throw some pics of one with an ad500e in it...he has the prototype

H

yeah, there's about 5-6 inchs(guestimate) from the bottom of the apogee to the bottom of the box, so plenty of room ;D

PRICE..... I spoke with Frank alot about this and keeping this thing affordable. With the lumber and the labor, he said it takes him about 3 hours to make one they will be $35.00 plus shipping.

Jeff has the prototype, Frank is making 4 more right now... Todd has put an order in for 2, there will be 2 left from the first run. Heath says definately in, so there will be 1 left from this order... PM me if you want it. once he gets finished with these, I'll get a number, if any, of how many more he needs to make.

I talked to Frank last nite and his router took a dive yesterday, he will have it back monday, so it looks like next week beore he spits anymore out.

Yeah, I know - I was just taking a jab at the fact that people feel a need to run the Apogee units in a protective box (since the physical design is so poor).   :o

and I'm gonna maintain that even though the box makes life easier, these boxes make the unit run HOTTER than if you just made room in the bag for the vents. even if you vent the box, you're confining much of the unit in wood. the hottest adk's i've ever felt have been in boxes. rakow got a visible blister at panic 01 berkeley. waayy better off imo putting vented metal struts on the screwholes, so you can run the unit vertically while taking pressure off the cables. my 2 cents from owning 4 of these bitches.

not hating. I've just had a lot of experience with these things, and my opinion is that they run hotter when enclosed in wood, no matter whether you vent them or fan them. You're speeding them toward their death by boxing them up. Two struts on each side to protect the output/inputs and 15 pin, that's all you need.

Not sure the status on the boxes Heath, I've been outta town for the weekend.

I'll call Frank tonite and see if he has got back started on them.

He was supposed to get the router back yesterday, and he already had the blanks cut for the sides, all he had to do was cut the holes and stick them together.

Doesn't sound like much does it ;)

I remember looking for one of those boxes a few years ago but they weren't available, so I came up with a different solution. I bought 2 of the rack mounts from Apogee, then I bought a rack mount case from Guitar center for about $40. There is now ventilation for the Apogee from both above and below, and I've got both the AD1000 and the power supply securely mounted. It is a little bulky, but works great. I've got a spare rack mount available if anyone wants to get one.

Cheers

I think John R has some pics of Candace's setup from Telluride Bluegrass Fest from a few years ago... probably some of the earliest rig pics
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

There's a photo of it here: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=3875.0 The Marantz DAT you see finally died and now I run into Wavelab, but the Apogee setup with case is the same.
