making DVD-Video format DVD-Rs
« on: April 05, 2004, 01:05:51 AM »
I want to take regular .avi and .mpg files and burn them onto a disc that a stand alone DVD Video player will read.  I've gathered that these files need to be converted into .vob files and the like.  Nero tells me I can do it but I need to buy a $25 plug-in first. Anyone know of an easy/free way to do this?

I have an 8x DVD+/- burner

much love

***EDIT***

This is the guide
it's worked well for me so far.  But the trial versions of these programs won't last long

TMPEnc Dvd Author only handles MGEG-1 and MPEG-2 files, so if you have any other mpeg or avi files the process becomes more tedious.  I've found a program (Winmpg) to convert my avi file to mpeg-2, then hopefully I can use DVD author.  I'll repot back with results.

schwillster;

i usually find everything i need here:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/convert#4;10

i've heard that many use TMPEnc for encoding.  i could have sworn it works with .avi files.

Q2. It seems you cannot convert AVI files to DVD-Video?
A. It is necessary to convert the format to MPEG-1/2 format based on the DVD video standard. This function, however, is not available in this software. To change the AVI file into an MPEG-1/2 file based on the DVD video standard, we recommend using our company's MPEG-1/2 encoder TMPGEnc Plus.

i found the answer on Help.

http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tp.html

looks like the Trial versions works for 14days.

yeah, I'm ove on this page http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php

looks like I only need 5 programs to get this thing to work right

EDIT: 7 programs,  the audio on the avi files is mpeg layer 3 (mp3) and not ac3 so I have to use mkwACT to uncompress to wav and another progran to recompress to ac3.

Originally I thought I could fit more episodes of the sopranos on a disc, but when making MPEG 2 (m2v) files, you can't select a bit-rate lower than 2000 so the resulant is files bigger than you planned.

Again, I have yet to fully test this method on a stand alone DVD Video player
