UA-5 Matrix levels (how to?)
« on: February 01, 2005, 06:33:21 PM »
Hey Yall,
I am new to taping (only one Mofro aud tape under my belt)...but I am running AKG300's >WMOD UA-5> JB3.  My question is....(and yes, I have looked in the archives)  How do you accurately set the levels for a Matrix mix?  I know the UA-5 has the knobs on the front and back to adjust the levels...but I guess what Im asking is.....

Say if the sounboard input is set to around 60% and the mics are set to around 60% is the sound that is captured going to sound weird bc of the overlap?  Does the levels set in theory have to add up to 100% (Ie. 70% board 30% mics)?  Does it matter?  Is it all subjective anyway?

Since there are no definative numbers or levels on the UA-5, how do you know what the best levels to set the board and mics are?

Do I just watch the R&L monitor's on the JB3?

Trying to get a matrix Papa Mali show Thursday night.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Use your ears, not a calculator. Just make shure your room mics are as close to the stage as possable or you'll get a delay. Have fun!

Thank you both.  Good information to start with.
I hope this works out.

The JB3 meters suck. Have you considered a SVU-x? these units are rock solid. I have been using the SVU-1 for 6 months and it has helped greatly.
Oktava MC012 > digi-mod UA-5 > JB3 > SVU-1

Team Philly, Team Oktava, Team SVU-x
