firewire transfer
« on: December 25, 2007, 11:17:25 AM »
I transfer my files directly to an external hard-drive, but the last external I bought had no firewire input. If I transfer from my Tascam HD-P2 via firewire to my laptop and then usb out of laptop to external am I transferring at usb speeds or somewhere in between or at firewire speeds?

Both.  Firewire in, USB out.  You will only be as fast as the slowest portion to the external.  If Firewire is faster you will have the in-between file on the laptop done before it is done on the USB step.  If the USB is faster it will be waiting for the Firewire.  I would do it in two steps as the MS operating systems do not run two simultaneous precesses well.  You will get it done faster if you load the laptop first and then xfer out on the USB.

fwi many of us with a P2 have noticed that the firewire from it is very slow.  I bought a cheap car reader and transfer via usb with it.  much much faster in my case.
