Check out the Grado 125 headphones in that price range as well.

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

Why should it matter so much if all he'll be doing is tracking tapes and listening to CDs at work?

i have a pair sony mdr-v600's and they are great, probably not as great as some of the higher priced akg's and whatnot.  i paid $100 but i think if you check out this link http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=22;action=display;threadid=8778 there are some refurb's from sony for ~$50 if you wanna save some $ and get something else as well.  just a thought.

closed headphones are for tracking in studios.  For example, an acoustical guitarist will have closed headphones on and be listening to the drum track.  The closed headphone style prevents leakage from the headphones into the guitar mic.  I'm sure there are other uses, like isolation....
