Topic: Loose gain pot on MP-2

Anybody ever tightened their own gain pots on the mp-2? Sound Devices said it's a flat rate $75 to look at it, and I'd rather not spend that just to tighten a knob.

You could put a little bit of tape around the pots so that they're taped to the front panel. It's not the nicest looking solution, but it definitely works. You can still turn the knobs, but it won't happen accidently.

you could use heat shrink tubing instead of the tape.  Will work just as good and not leave any residue behind when you remove it.  Super cheap at any electronics store .

Do you think the heatshrink would cause too much friction? (ie. make the pots too tight??)

I wouldnt think it would be any different than the tape. Just cleaner.

I've read a few times that people sent their MP2s in to get the new spring to use with rechargeable batteries, and while SD had their pre, they just tightened the gains.  They don't advertise that they do that, but I think for the $15 for a new spring, they would tighten those just because they're a good company....

Maybe except, I've only had them quote me a $75 flat rate repair fee for that spring replacement. If it were $15, I'd do that for sure.

when i sent my mp-2 to sd last year to get the rechargeable battery mod, they tightened the gain pots and even fixed a meter light that was intermittant....all for $35.

$35 was what I paid as well...that being said the product has been MD'ed for a year...increasing prices isnt abnormal on a product that you dont manufacture anymore

Another option is to pop the knobs off and insert a small rubber o-ring between the knob and the face plate. Worked like a champ for me.

I thought of doing that, cept I couldn't find a suitable rubber o-ring.

I love how us tapirs "repurpose" all this household gear.

My wife is wondering why I've got all these carpenters clamps, tent poles, and duct tape.  Even though I don't do any home renovation or camping!!!

Take a peek at the nut that retains the pots (under the knobs). The brass nuts that hold the pots are chamfered and the o-ring should fit nicely in the countersunk part of the retaining nut. Drop the knobs back on, and apply gentle pressure to compress the o-ring just a bit. Should be just enough to tighten things up... Hope this helps.
