AKG 460b mk46/ck1x > V2 line-in to NJB3
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:17:48 AM »
I'm going to run a V2 in my setup this weekend for Panic here in Raleigh, NC.  I've listened to a couple recording Sloan Simpson made with this setup and I was happy with the results.  I've run a couple of test with a white noise cd on the home system.  I read over the V2 calibration off the Sonic Sense discussed here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,8010.msg92551.html#msg92551

Anyone have any last minute suggestions?  I know this box is very forgiving.  This will be run in the Walnut Creek outdoor pavilion.  Let me know.

I would not run the V2 overly hot as the signal from the rca outs may smoke your JB3 line-input. When I use the V2 with an unbalanced input on the recorder I usually set the gain on the V2 around 20db > 25db with the recorder at about 7.5 on the dial. I am not sure how the analog gain stage works on the JB3. Gain on the V2 is 'very' clean so do not worry about introducing noise in that part of the chain (even if you run low gain). My V2 manual states that one should always use the least amount of gain necessary, but the current .pdf version makes no mention of this. Happy recording!

Thanks for the info Kyle.  I'm running XLR out of the V2 to a Line-in on the NJB3.  If I remember correctly this is not as "hot" as the RCA??  I'll dial it back so I don't over drive the NJB3.  I can always make it up in the after post work.

I have run line-in to my jb3 a number of times now (from an MR-1000 last year and currently with my mini-mp.)
While the metering on the JB3 is the suck, if you aren't pegging it out, you're gonna sound just fine. I ran overly conservative for set one of Mule last week and a little gain in post didn't ruin it at all.

Thanks for the info rowjimmy.....that is exactly what I'm thinking.  I'm running a SVU1 behind my NJB3 to help me watch the levels a little better.  I have it calibrated so when the green hits the orange lights that is as hot as I want to run the levels.  Just add a little gain in the post and it should be good.  I'm looking forward to hearing my Panic recordings with this setup.

the mics/cables/caps are very warm and natural sounding, when paired with a nice clean preamp like the V2 or V3 they will make fantastic recordings, I'd say go with this set up and enjoy!
