v3 competitors?
« on: February 02, 2006, 03:35:28 PM »
it seems that the v3 is the standard  when in comes to high end  what other comparable units are out there?

I'd like to design an open taping rig and dont want to be the same as everyone else... otherwise Id stick to getting
copys from the section boys.   Or continue fob with a neat and tidy stealth package.

For starters:

V3
MiniMe
722
PSP-2 + ADC
Mytek Stereo192 ADC + preamp
T+ or W+ UA5 (some can't hear the diff between these and a V3)
V2 + ADC
Sonosax SX-M2 + ADC
MiniMP + ADC
Milab VM-44 Links > Fostex FR-2LE or
Naiant IPA (tinybox format) >
Roland R-05

are you looking for a pre and a/d in one box? what about price? what kinda mics you gonna be running?

...(I)  dont want to be the same as everyone else...

Why not, everyone is doing similar things for a reason....because it works great.
For comparison, would you want to drive on hexagon wheels because everyone else has round wheels?
I don't think so.....

Anyhow, here's an alternative:

722 + mics = done

Ideally one box pre and a/d
mics   mbho's  or maybe naks.

maybe something like this is overkill for the naks? I dunno

mbho > 722 is a really good combo. i personally would upgrade the naks before investing in a nice pre/AD but that's just me.

do you have a budget? the various ua-5 flavors are also a great option for a pre/AD in a single box and has the option of 24-bit. there is also that ad1000 that popped up in the YS today, but the remaining life could be questionable and you have to deal with 12v SLAs.

I played with one for a couple weeks and it reminded me a lot of the m148. actually, it is the M148 on steroids. Very similar sonically IMHO. I want one  :-\

FYI, when I spoke with the Oade Bros a few weeks ago they indicated they are not offering the W mod for the R4.

still not sure how i feel about the portico...

i've got a hard on for one, but just can't justify dropping the coin for it, and then having to also get an adc ta boot.

it's also huge and needs 12v...

i like it at times, but it's too "thick" for my taste a lot of times, too
