Great resource, Ted; thanks for putting this together.  I can tell you that the original Edirol R-09 (not HR) uses the same "B" plug size, has the same center pin (+) polarity and requires the same 3v voltage.  Don't know if it can be safely run off 5v USB like the HR model but the DC adapter that came with it outputs around 3.3-3.4v, FWIW.

Early mixpre's had same connector as MP-2.  Then they switched to the hirose, not sure why or when

The Sound Devices USBPre2 will accept either a USB-2  or USB-3 plug "B" style.  The unit has a USB-3 style plug on it because it is more robust.  Unit can be powered via USB Jack with 5V {red +5v, black -5v (ground)} Green and white wires are for data

Hey I am pretty positive  the same wiring applies to the microtrackers for external battery power via the USB jack.  They have a mini B style plug.    USBPre2 has A/D converter in it so you should put it in the other list.  Great idea making a list!

Great idea!

The Korg MR-1 takes the same as the PMD-661, ie Type B, center pin (+). It requires a 5V, 1A source.

The Tekkeon MP3450 takes a KPPX-3P Kycon DC Power Connector.

NOLAfishwater pointed out this battery in a recent power thread for SD788.  The battery looks good; 153 Watt/Hr or 42500 mAh at (4.75A max), voltage outputs are 5V on USB and switchable output port for 12V or 19V.

Another piece of gear you can add to this list, Ted: the Roland R-05 recorder uses the same power adapter (Roland PSB-6U) as the Edirol R-09 and R-09HR.  As to whether or not you can run it on 5v USB like the HR, I can't confirm that.

Just an observation: I find it ironic that no one has listed the power supply specs for the Sony PCM-M10, one of the more popular small recorders on these boards.  Then again, with its ridiculously long battery times I'm guessing nobody has found the need to use an external power supply. :)

I vote to make this a sticky!

I just picked up a Roland R-05 and will test it with a USB when I get it at the end of December, back ordered from Musician's Friend.

The m-10 take 3v center pin positive.  I had a random plug that came with my Digi-concepts PP99 that fits, I just have no idea the plug size, very small.  I plan to bring it down to rat shack and size it one if these days.

Sonosax SX-M2 / 12-24v / Size M, 5.50mm OD × 2.10mm ID / Center pin (+)  Ring (-) / No perfect Plug is Known, needs to be gaff taped in place

You're right, there is no "perfect" plug per se, but a "B" tip with 2 or 3mm of plastic shaved off of the barrel is the most optimum I've found. Besides that a long C (used by Panasonic Toughbook laptops) works without modification and stays put just fine. The long C is what the old powerizer batteries shipped with but those plugs aren't usable with the tekkeon series.

I tried a non-modified B and it would short out if I looked at it funny even after using tape so I went hunting elsewhere. ymmv.

To my knowledge Sony exclusively uses Japanese standard eiaj connectors for dc power

See

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIAJ_connector

And since the m10 uses 3v it should be using an EIAJ-01

Updated Roland R-05 to include powering with 5v USB

Roland R-05 does not power off of the USB 5v in my experience. Well it will turn on but immediately goes into USB mode for storage. Not sure if it can be fooled like the Tascam DR100 Mark II.

You are correct that the R-05 does not recieve power through the mini usb port.  The specs that I provided are for the DC input of the R-05 which can be powered by 5V USB power (Provided by a computer, Ipod type external battery or larger size external batery with a USB port like the tekkeon 3450).

Thanks for the thread.  It's already saved me time.  I have two bits to add:

Tascam DR100 / 5v/ Size B, 4.00mm OD × 1.70mm ID / Center pin (+)  Ring (-) / Normal Polarity / works on 6V DC input, can be powered for recording via USB connector

I've used a 4-AA alkaline cell sled to power the unit -- Phantom on, 24/48.  (I suppose the mkii is similar, but I really can't say.)

Marantz PMD-761 / 15 V / (a standard size) / (?) / (?) / works on 18V DC input

Again, I've used AA cell sleds, alkaline and NiMH.

I see that the Tascam DR-680 is supposed to be good between 8-13V.  I have a 13.2V NiMH battery that, when fully charged, reads just above 14V.  Does anyone know if I should be in the clear with this, or if I'd be setting myself up for some blown recordings and a few repair bills?  Here's a link to the battery I'd be using, although I have a different brand.

Here's a link to the battery I'd be using, although I have a different brand.

http://www.switronix.com/products/batteries?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=25&category_id=30

The 680 seems to be finicky about voltages.  I would not go outside of published specs and even then maybe give it a 1 volt buffer on either end of the power rating.

Recorders
Marantz PMD-620 / 5v / Size B, 4.00mm OD × 1.70mm ID / Center pin (+)  Ring (-) / Normal Polarity

Per your indirect encouragement I have tested the 620 using a modified USB > DC "B tip" cable providing 5v from a rechargeable USB battery pack.

Ran 22 hours with no known issues... I did'nt really listen to the playback for more than a minute...

So for "fun" I decided to hook up my battery pack to the UA-5 (reverse polarity) and oddly enough it powered up and the phantom power light is on. Sadly I don't have a spare cable to power that and my recorder at the same time or else I would test it all out.

So what are the potential problems of running a 9v dc device with phantom power (known to run on 7.2v) on 5v?

Edit:
I see in your (tgakidis) profile that you have the same type of UA-5 that I'm running. No doubt you can test this in a more professional manner than myself :)

So where does one find these DC plugs?  I'm looking for a USB > Type B and am having no luck.

Radio Shack doesn't have a direct USB > adapter so you have to buy the cable and each plug end separately and it ends up coming close to 40 bucks.  Thats ridiculous.

Edit:  Never mind found it.  Wasn't putting in the right search terms.

For any of the USB > Type B guys theres 5 of these left.

You have a nice external battery for the DR-2d or other 5v recorders.

I thought the stock m248 only had a plug for the charger not for external batteries - the battery configuration of the m248 is similar to the 148 in that is a number of 12v sla's run in series and parallel in order to power the op-amps and also provide 48V phantom - something like 4-6 of these 12v batteries.  The charging circuit is only used to charge the batteries and cannot be used to power the unit.

Doug did this to remove the need for DC-DC converters - is my understanding.

So to add external power you would need to have someone replace these batteries with a DC-DC converter circuit.

You can run the Tascam DR100mkii off the 5v USB port with a USB > 4.00mm OD × 1.70mm ID (Center pin +, Ring - ) cable.  I can build you a custom cable if you need one.  See here about half way down the first post "5v USB External Battery Cables" http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=131680.0

Ok.

So the accessories with the Anker Pro seems to be fine, right ?

http://www.ianker.com//images/pics/goods_img/79AN20L-SA/35171.jpg

There's a 4.00x1.70 adapter.

And there's also a usb / 5V adapter :

http://www.ianker.com//images/pics/goods_img/79AN20L-SA/34199.jpg

Do you think it's fine ?

I prefer to ask before to buy cause you seem to know this battery stuff.

Thanks :)

I just picked up a Sony tc-d5 cassette recorder.
Anyone know the size of its tip connector for going into an eco-charge bp-50 (6 volt), also its polarity?
Just getting to know this machine.
mark.

On Ebay, the AC power supply (Sony AC-D4L power supply  6v-650mA) shows = center negative.

Saw were someone asked about DR-680MKII Power

A bit of bad news as far as external power goes--the MKii uses a smaller size external adapter.  The one for the MKi doesn't fit.

OD 4.75mm x ID 1.7mm (adapt-a-plug size C) seems to fit the best.

OD 4.0mm x ID 1.7mm (adapt-a-plug size B) also worked but was not as snug as the C.

Thanks for this great resource Ted!

I'm making up a battery supply power cable for the DR-680mkII (I've yet to use the mkII version of the 680 without AC power) and noticed the voltage note in this list:

Quote
Tascam DR-680 / 8-13v / Size M, 5.50mm OD × 2.10mm ID / Center pin (+)  Ring (-)
Tascam DR-680mkII / 12v / Size C, OD 4.75mm x ID 1.7mm Center Pin (+) Ring (-)

I've always powered my MK1 with 9V DVD batteries.  Will those not work with the MKII? Does it require the full 12V? Any one run the MKII successfully on 9V?

I should probably ask in the team 680 thread.  I'll report back here once I find out.

Tascam DR-680mkII / 12v / Size C, OD 4.75mm x ID 1.7mm Center Pin (+) Ring (-)
is what the threadstart says.

Does anyone know what the voltage limits actually are?
The entry for the original 680 says 8-13 V.
And I'm worried that my homebuilt power pack might harm my 680mkII.

Does anyone know for sure?

One is allowed to use 8*1.8V lithium batteries, which makes for 14.4V (actually closer to 15V for a set of brand new lithium batteries (like the Energizer AA cells).

So is it reasonable/safe to assume that a battery pack that could supply a maximum of 12.9V will not damage  a Tascam DR680mkII?

I'm ordering a new 12V external battery for powering my DR680MkII and came here to check the 680MKII plug size and realized that I'd neglected to report back on 9V powering of the DR680MKII.

My DR680MkII operated fine on my stash of old 9V "DVD batteries" over the past year.  But now that they've grown unreliable, I'm moving to this TalentCell

Speaking of the Talentcell, I have two of what Gutbucket just bought. Im wondering if anyone could foresee any issues running 3 units off of it at once? Hirose out of sound devices 302>to adapta-tip>splitter> mini-me> into 12v out of talentcell + Marantz pmd-671 out of 9v out of talentcell. Ive been running 12v to mini me and 9v to pmd for a few months with no issues and great runtime. I tried the new set-up this morning and everything powered up fine, although I checked battery life through the leds of the 302 and it showed about 3/4 full on external power, but from my experience with it that's plenty for 3 to 4 hours. Any insight to issues that may arise would be greatly appreciated. Going to test it Friday.

The insert which came with the Talentcell indicates the 12V supply is good for loads up to 6 Amps.  You should be okay as long as your total draw is < 6A.

If necessary you could parallel the two batteries and use both simultaneously to increase your run time (halving the amperage draw from each).

I was contemplating doing that but I did a lil research today and the draw is under 6v and I also found out the led battery  settings werent what they needed to be in the setup menu. It was set for 18v which would explain the few LEDs off when I powered the whole thing up. Looks like I'm good to go. Just ordered a third one. Found some pics of the Marine charger you made with the cig lighters. That's my project for this weekend.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether I can still use the battery cable that came with my UA-5 and stock Oade Bros. battery (that has now died). I know the UA-5 power input has reversed polarity, but I don't know if the battery also had the polarity reversed.

You need a 9v battery, 12v may be to much. (See power input voltage on pic below)

Look on the first post at the bottom and you’ll see the most current batteries out there that supply 9v.  What battery brand/style is your old cable for!

Thanks again. There were only two batteries with live links to 9V packs on the first page. There's a lot of threads/posts on here from folks saying they use 12V batteries with their UA-5 and it works fine.
The 12V packs seem more readily available and less costly.

The battery that failed was an Oade Brothers Battery Pack with no other stickers or brand listings. But I'm told by others it was a 12 volt pack.

Question about powering a UA-5 and need some help.
All the threads on this device and powering options are quite old.  This is the latest thread dealing with it.

Due to being discontinued around 15 years ago, most users were powering the UA-5 with DVD batteries/RC batteries.

I just purchased one in the Yard Sale.  I would like to feed the device using the 9v plug on a Talent Cell.
I understand the polarity issues with the cord.

However ...
The Talent Cell outputs 9v at 1A.
The UA-5 accepts 9v at 450mA.
What issues am I expected to run into powering the UA-5 with the Talent Cell?
Its this possible?
Will I need a way to "Step-down" the amperage to the UA-5?  If so, what would the solution be?

Thanks for anyone's help.  There is currently no thread dealing with "modern" power solutions in the form of Li-ion battery banks.
Powering a deck and pre from the same battery would make for a smaller set-up.

Am I correct in assuming that the device will only draw the needed 450 mA if provided with 9v ?

Hi,

Hopefully this very usefull thread is still alive!
I read on a French forum that Fostex FR-2LE could be powered directly from a 5V powerbank.
I tried, and guess what, it works perfectly fine, with 1 or 2 phantom powered clippy em272 mics (from Micbooster).
I now make several hours long recordings with a regular Ugreen powerbank, using the 2.1A usb output and a usb A to 5.5*2.1 jack adapter cable.
A cheap and efficient solution!

I'll probably be back soon on this thread, cause I also need to power a Fostex FR2 (I'll probably need to change the weird EIAJ 4 DC-in plug on my unit for something more common), a Tascam HD-P2 and a Sound Devices 702.

Cheers, Cedric from France
