Title: How are your DAT Masters Holding Out?
Post by: Jammin72 on February 10, 2008, 11:21:51 PM
So am I one of the few that hasn't taken the time to transfer all of his DAT masters over to a new medium.  I'm starting to realize that over a decade has passed on so many of them... who knows what's actually left of the data.

I've had a sketchy 3800 that I haven't trusted with my collection in some time. That combined with the torrent explosion has had me concerned with the hear and now (pun intended) rather than dealing with what is essentially my retirement fund of memories and music. I'm going to pick up a serviced deck to start the process of getting these things crossed over.

How's it gone for those with older tapes, is this going to be a disappointing ride?

I'd say 90% of my DAT's from '89-'05 have held up.  Some that have problems (small glitches)  I can play on a few different decks and find one that will play the tape glitch free.   Some are just too far gone, luckily most of those have a clone or 2 out there with friends that I am able to track down.  Sometimes I luckily might have had a CD-R copy or a DAT back up of my own to get around the glitch problems.

Overall, I'd say your chances are good that your DAT's are healthy.

Overall, I've been pretty pleased with the quality of my DAT archival results.  Granted, I've only been listening to my masters, which were new tapes, once played and then stored.  I haven't listened to all the DATs that have been replaced by shn/flac sets.  A few of the masters needed multiple play-throughs, but ultimately I haven't lost any data.  And these are DATs as old as 1992.

1999-2003 and so far so good.  about 95% have been transferred.  I had more problems recording to dat than the tape holding up.  my p1 liked to put pops here and there after only 2 years   >:(

My DATs seem to be holding up well, but my decks are dying... I haven't used one of my decks in two years. I turned it on and put a tape in, it wouldn't play. Seems one of the capstans won't turn anymore. The sad part is, I had this unit tuned up by Paul and crew about 3 months before it sat idle for a while. Now If I want to use it again, I'll have to pay him to fix it again. Fortunately my Sony R300 has been holding up a bit better.

while not my masters, over the past couple of years, I've been transferring a lot of DAT masters from Dave Flaschner, and more recently, DAT masters from Eliot Byron.  these DATs are generally from '92-'00, with more from the early '90s and less from the later '90s.  In general, the DATs have held up pretty well.  That said, it's not uncommon that there will be one or two drop-outs that need to be patched with another source of the show.  and there has been one DAT with terrible digi-noise throughout the set.  But generally speaking, I'd say the majority of these DATs have held up rather well.  I've been transferring these with first a Sony R500, and now a Tascam DA-20mkII.

Just picked up a refurbished DA-45HR from Paul and company with low head hours.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  The Dead and Panic collection I'm not too concerned with, it's getting out there on it's own though I may have some less or non-circulated sources. It's the Personal masters and recordings where I was the only one there recording that seem worth saving.  Now whether to send the 3800 for service or to fleabay it... as is.

I think they'll be getting transferred to inkjet printable TY DVD's, one wave and one FLAC file for now.  If I start worrying about tracking things it'll never get done.

Glad to hear a lot of it is keeping well.

mine seem to be holding up fine but I really need to find someone to transfer my masters. I'm nervous I'm going to lose some of these and there are some hot shows that need to be heard.

I think I got lucky, out of about 200-300 masters, only 6 wont play in my Sony R300 deck, they are going to another tapers house this weekend to another deck (not sure of make.model) to see if it is the low end Sony or the DAT itself

having mixed results myself
most of the older ones ('93 to '99) are fine
after that... it's a crapshoot
I would say that is due to the quality of manufacturing

the tapes I recorded with a Sony D8 were the WORST
the Teac DA-P20/Tascam DA-P1/Sony D7 had much better results
I will eventually replace my Fostex D-5 with a Tascam DA-40 or a Sony R500
since these units have been giving MOST people excellent results

overall, mine are a-ok...if they are troublesome on the D5, ill play them on the D8, which is the original deck on 99% of my masters....then straight to wav & flac for archiving

Your D8 was probably out of alighment in the opposite direction of your current deck.

The DA-45 from Prodigital is making me extremely happy error rates on my masters are now clocking in in single digits mostly.  I forgot just how much difference a spec deck makes in the output. I'm wanting to go through the collection again.

Who's got my heady Omni DAT masters.  62's sound good!
