SLA Charging Question....
« on: April 13, 2005, 02:57:54 PM »
Trying to charge up a couple of 12v 7.0Ah SLA for use this weekend, and they don't seem to want to go to float....

I'm using one of those power-sonic wall-wort type chargers, I believe the model # is 12300A, and it has the three LEDs.

I tested both batt's before charging, and they were both right at @ 11.9V.  After about 16 hours of charging, the 'green' LED did not come on for either.  Both Batts read right around 13.4V when I test them, but neither have reached the power/float stage on the charger?

Anybody has any ideas why this would be?  Think the batts. might be bad?  The charger?

For what its worth, the Green LED on the charger does light up when you plug it in with no batt connected....  I'm confused  :-\

I just googled the model # for the charger your using and found that it's designed for use with 1-5ah batteries.  Thus, it's not calibrated for 7ah batteries and likely is not seeing the internal reisistance (or whatever triggers it's fully charged light) it expects from a smaller battery.

Thanks for pointing that out dsnacks, guess I should have noticed that in the first place.  These are batts. from here at work, and the guy that supplied me with them gave me the charger to use as well.  I just assumed that it was the correct one.

Since they are reading up into the 13's I'm guessing that they have been charged sufficiently.  Is this an incorrect assumtion?

I'll have to tell the guys that use them that they need to get a different charger.  Sorry for the doppy questions, this is my first venture into the SLA wolrd....

no worries, I certainly didn't know the answer off the top of my head.  I'd suspect that they're fully charged and would be concerned that the too-small charger could overcharge 'em if left on for too long (since it doesn't appear to be "downshifting" to trickle mode).  Are you planning on using 'em for taping?  If so, perhaps you should do a "dry run" and let 'em power your gear while recordng your stereo to assure that, as charged, they'll power things sufficiently.

Did a dry run with them before I set'em on the charger, and it ran things just fine and dandy, though not as long as I hope they will with a full charge.

Like I said, before charging, they were both registering right around 11.9V, and I got like six hours out of one of them.  I think that they had been sitting around for quite a while before I picked them up, so hopefully, much longer run time after having been charged.  I know that Fozzy said he got in the neighborhood of 15....

I don't have to worry about them running over 12V do I....  They're just for the UA5 and JB3.  Made the hacked cable with the voltage regulator and all....

i just got a big 6v 12amp battery off of alex herd, and since i rewired it up and all, my 6v ecocharge charger wont 'float' these batts either :( so im guessing my charger cant handle the 12amp batts since its used to charging 7amp batts :(

FWIW, when I built my 12AH 6V it def. took a different charger than my 7AH.

Check out the AH capacity of these chargers for comparison.

If it's a new battery it will probably break in a little bit and float after a short period. That's what mine seem to do.

you can find one of these at your local wally world. ($16)
I use it to charge my 12v7Ah , and then use one of the smaller Powersonic to charge the 12v5Ah

It will also do large 6v batts aswell.
