V2>AD20 a good combo?
« on: April 06, 2004, 02:03:07 PM »
Thinking about picking up a Deneke to run out of my V2 solely for the A/D. I'd be running optical into a JB3. Is this a good combo? Would I need some sort of attenuator out of the V2, or can I just plug it in and smile?

not much of a point to run V2> AD20 as the AD20 wil add more gain before it gets to the A/D stage.
can't rmember specifics, but the AD20 adds like 20db or so minmimum.

if you just need a A/DC, look at the Graham Patten ADC20, or the Sony SBM-1, both of which are cheaper than the Denecke AD20

cool! Wow...that was fast!

Thanks luvean--I've been wondering if there was a more cost effective way to achieve AD. You rule. I'll give the two you mentioned a look.

i'd have to agreee with the majority, dont run a great preamp like the v2 in front of the ad-20, i'd say, either run it into your dat or pick up a stand alone a/d, i ran the v2 into my d100 before with the dat being the a/d and the results i was pleasantly surprised with

I would say either stick with the a/d stage of the dap1 or even the jb3 and save for something other than an adc20. I ran the 422>v2>adc20 for a couple of months and the transparency and crispness of the v2 with the harsh digital top end of the adc20 made tapes that were hard to listen to for extended periods.

clarification:
you can get a stock SBM-1(used) for about the same price as a AD20(new)

I'd put an AD20 in my chain any day over an ADC20.  Didn't Julie G. used to run 148>AD20?  I think she might have had to use some pads in between them, though.  Her tapes sounded great IMO.  If you mainly want the AD20 for the optical out you can pick up a Hosa spdif to optical converter and just come out of your P1 I believe.

if your going to run V2 and need a A/D that outputs optical.
Why not get a stock UA-5 do the DIY digital mod and go
V2> line in> UA-5> optical> JB-3

probably would be the cheepest way if you can do the mod yourself and still would be a cheep way if you couldn't.
I bet using a V2 infront of an UA-5 would sound pritty good too

this is a good idea, i run the v2 in front of the UA-5 when running my UA-5 for board matrix's and it is leaps and bounds over the stock ua-5 pre amps
