anyone use an external monitor?
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:50:26 PM »
I'm looking to get a 7" or so.  Mostly for focusing and framing.  My eyes get sore looking at the tiny on cam monitor.  I'm sure you'd want "at least" 600 x 800 resolution?  HDMI in is too much $$ so I'm thinking composite over component in?  Curious if anyone uses one.  Hit me up with your experiences.  Oh ya, battery power would be prefered...

I have absolutely no experience in this in regards to concert video taping and I know there are better options but if you look on eBay for a broken portable DVD player, many have component IN on them. Find one with a bad disc drive or something that would not affect this function and you can get a cheap external screen for about $20.

that looks like a really good solution.

I don't think composite video is completely necessary since you're not watching movies on it, you're just making sure the subject is in frame and in focus.
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

A DVD player while not all that useful for focus, is mildly better than a 3" LCD from 3' or more away.  I'm tending towards wanting some form of external monitor myself.  Mainly because I raise my device about a yard above my head via a monopod.  And it gets a little ridiculous to try and frame your subject a yard out from a 3" LCD.  More so if the angle puts it where the sun is.

Be aware that not all camcorders output a video signal WHILE recording.  My FH1 only outputs when NOT recording.  Which is the main blockage for me actually taking the external monitor plunge.  Otherwise my video device is a lazy facilitator.  Raise up the monopod and check out the roof without ever using a ladder.  Take it inside and watch it on the 42" HDTV over HDMI.  Pause when needed.  That hard to read label in the small of the water heater closet.  Camcorder plus flashlight, no glasses needed.  With an external monitor I probably wouldn't have to push record for some of that stuff.

I just hooked my Sony cx550v to a Sony 9inch portable(the one i linked)and it is good enough for focusing HD easily. You need to adapt from the component which the input of dvd portable is mini 1/8th component in ...the dvd comes with that cable you will just need a coupler(radio shack) to go from the 2 male COMPONENT to break down to the mini which is supplied. This is a cheap an excellent solution. Will actually be using this alot now after i build a small clamp to attach to my tripod.Link to coupler.....enjoy!!!

No Affilation, but this looks like a good deal if battery power is needed.

Here is a huge bargin if you can live with a little time code window burn and AC power, again no affiliation.

Thanks for the recs guys.  I have read a ton about the Sony FX820/FX950 and they get great reviews for camcorder use.  Just sniped a new fx950 off Ebay for $103 shipped!   ;D

Sweet!  I'll likely improve on my focusing but will most assuredly improve on my framing...

I am a bit late to the party here, but I will soon be parting with my beloved Tote Vision 703HD.  I use it in conjunction with a 3-way HD Switch for critical focus/aperture with my XH-A1, HV-30 & HFS-10 and have been extremely pleased with it's performance.  I typically mount it using a superclamp in conjunction with a Noga Israeli arm or on my miniature Manfrotto pistol-grip tripod.  A Tekkeon will run it forever on a single charge.  PM me if at some point you decide to upgrade!

Take care!
