Depends what your needs are and what camera your using.I don't really see the benefit unless your footage is for Discovery channel broadcast as if your delivering to the web ,DVD,or Bluray you still have to lower the bitrate losing ALL benefits.

One Benefit is it records 4:2:2 apple prores giving you alot more options in post for color correction, grading and stuff like that.

production video recorders. Although say with a single censor like the HV40 many say that there is not noticeable difference in picture quality. Now add to a 3 sensor cam running thru HDMI nice uncompressed look, where you can really do some post production.

Some say for  those who want to get more life out of their taped base video recorder,its a nice match, and like stated before same audio processing as in their digital recorders 722, 744t,788 etc.

I'd stick with sound devices, does excellent conversion, and audio too...
