Artist Stipulation: Streaming OK, but no Download?
« on: September 20, 2018, 12:11:44 PM »
SSIA pretty much. was approved to tape a show a couple days ago where there were no restrictions on the type of taping (had mics on a mic stand, camcorder on a tripod, and a board feed would have been ok with the band, but there was no time for the venue FOH to set me up with one). however, the woman running the merch table who OK'd me did so by texting the tour manager (who i wasn't able to talk to personally), and she added the stipulation that for distribution, they didn't want the ability for people to download it, but any sort of streaming where you just hit "play" was ok. this caught me off guard, as i've never had an artist split hairs like this before. i would've liked to clarify things a bit more, but this info being relayed to me secondhand via text was the best i could do. i also wasn't quite sure if this was the woman running the merch table telling me this, or the tour manager, or the artist himself. has anyone encountered this request before and how did you handle it? since i did video, i'm guessing putting the video on youtube would be ok since youtube doesn't provide any official way to download files (there are supposedly 3rd party sites that do so but i'm going to pretend i'm not aware of that). and as far as audio only, archive.org provides streaming AND download capabilities that go hand-in-hand, but i'm not sure if there's a way to pick streaming only and no downloads? unfortunately i don't own my own website/blog, as that would be one way to deal with it.

I know for a fact that there is an option during the upload process to the LMA to have the audio stream only. I'd be willing to wager that there is probably a similar function for video as well.

awesome, i wasn't aware of that. this is an artist that isn't on the LMA, so i would have to put it under community audio. hopefully there's an option for that there too.

I recently asked an artist if he had a taping policy. He said he never gave it much thought, and continued with "yeah, I don't care if you record it." I said thanks and as I turned to walk away, he added, "on second thought, can you please not post it to the internet." I told him I would respect that but could I ask why that stipulation, and he said, "I play a lot of unreleased songs in my shows that will eventually be on my Patreon." Seemed as reasonable a reason as I ever heard. I abided.

We at the LMA would really prefer this not be in widespread use. Case by case basis should be run by the LMA admins at etree at archive dot org.
If you have a problem relating to the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) please send an e-mail to us admins at LMA(AT)archive(DOT)org or post in the LMA thread here and we'll get on it.

And considering I've only given that information to a one or two users, I'm disappointed to see it being shared as a routine "feature".

Hell I don't think I even knew that!  I know (from you) one person who does it so i think we know how it leaked ;)

Back to the OP, since artist isn't on LMA use mixcloud.  Free unlimited streaming.  Just convert the untracked file to mp3 and upload.

Soundcloud is stream only and it's free with some limitations about how much material you can host. No limitations on format (I put 24 bit flacs on mine) like mixcloud which is mp3 only.

Was not aware of that. I'll delete my post to keep the info from spreading if you'd like.
