JB3 defrag?
« on: October 26, 2003, 01:42:48 AM »
Is there an option anywhere in the software for this?  I heard about a disc clean-up thing, but I can only find one in the Play Center software, and that cleans up bad links, don't think it does a defrag at all.  Can't find anything for the actual jb3.

btw, i have firmware version 1.32.02p

thanks,
john

pull the battery out
while holding the 'stop' button, pop the battery back in
press play as soon as you see the 'creative labs' logo
select 'clean up' with the scroll wheel and let it do it's thing
select 'reboot'

would anyone happen to have any guidelines on how often to do the defrag procedure?

would it be something you should do after a certain amount of recording hours, or only if you notice the JB3 acting 'sluggish' like you would for a pc

It would depend on how many shows you record on it and how often you delete stuff.  This is the first I did it since I bought it 6 months ago.  I'll tell you one thing, now that I know how to do it, I'll be doing the disk cleanup every 5 or so shows.

I tried doing that...nothing happened.  Just went straight to the "now playing" screen.  Do you continue to hold "stop" throughout the process  or continue to hold "play"...

I've been wondering how to do that...  I had recorded about 15 shows and dumped gigs and gigs of mp3s on and off...  plus a full 4.3gb dvd on and off.. so I am sure it could use a clean up!!

Also if you have two batteries you have to pull BOTH of them out...

Hmmm....  "scan disk" has been running for a while and I don't hear any disc activity...

I have the 20gb one and it's probably 75% filled...  how long should the "scan disk" take??

Ok this sucks...  It sat at the "Scan Disk..." screen for about 15 min so I pulled the battery and tried again...

Seems like the same thing is happening.

Could a low battery cause this?

I will try to do a disc clean up again when I get home from work using the ac power...

Grrr....

or maybe I didn't wait long enough...  It sorta sounds like the disc may be spinning...  But it's not accessing around so there isn't the clicking noise...  I will give it 30min this time...

OK the battery died after about 10min...

I have a feeling the disc cleanup is battery intensive...  like transfering over the usb.

---update---

ok... it was the low battery...  I got it home pulled the batteries plugged in the ac turned it on.  pulled out the ac, then plugged it back in holding the stop button - then it play when the creative logo poped up.  It started the clean up immediately this time...  thanks again..
