Best way to clip CA-14 cards to your shirt for stealthing?
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:52:22 PM »
First off, I do realize that many stealth issues are be best left to PMs.  If there's something you can help me with that shouldn't be posted publicly, please feel free to PM me.

I've owned my CA-14's for over a year now, but I've only used them a couple of times because I simply cannot find a logical way to clip them to my shirt.  The fixed-position clip (which is at a 90 degree angle to the orientation of the mic) always seems to leave the mics in the worst possible position when clipped to a shirt (i.e. pointing straight up or straight down).

I'm used to clipping much smaller mics to my shirt collar and just forgetting about them.  The CA-14's, however, are a bit too heavy for shirt collar mounting.  They always pull the collar down under their weight and the mics end up pointing toward the ground.

There are so many people stealthing with CA-14s that someone must have found a solution.  Everyone can't be hat mounting them?  FWIW, I really don't want cards clipped to my head/hat/glasses - I don't like the idea of not being able to move my head.

I've clipped CA-14 cards to the top of a shirt collar a couple of times with no problem. Yes, they pull the collar down a bit (to either side, so mics are still pointed forward), but that's not the worst thing, as it keeps them away from your neck. I personally prefer hat-mounted because I'm short, but either works.

Sorry, I don't internet much on the weekends as I do not have a connection at home and the phone is a PITA for this type of stuff.

I think I responded to everyone now. Seems like others are using a similar method already.

ETA: About the questions of noise, here is a show I taped with this method: https://archive.org/details/dalewatson2012-09-15.CA-14omni.flac24

I was pretty far back and the omnis still did pretty well.

Particularly in a quiet situation, I'm not happy with the CA-14 on a shirt collar.  Something always rustles one of them at some point.

So if someone has gotten hoppedup's PM and can pass it on, please do.

If you could send me a Pm regarding this, it would be much appreciated! I have a set of CA-14s on their way to me now and id love to get some great ideas from other tapers.

Chris, will think I'm only messing with him...but seriously, if this is such a good method and there is this much interest, why not send it to Chris Church and have him include it with each package he sells?

I sort of advocate the old fashioned method of, get out there, try it, listen, make adjustments, learn, try again, listen, make adjustments method.  I'm not much into coddling.

After sending my method out to many people, the responses indicate most people are doing something really similar anyway. It's not rocket science, but a few people have also said that they were going to tweak their method just a bit because they hadn't thought of one aspect. A few are going to take what I did and make it better.

I haven't stealthed in a couple of years and have no plans to anytime soon. The links I posted were from stealth tapes I made of taper-friendly artists, actually. They were both at a festival with sixteen venues within a half-mile radius. I was able to move among shows really quickly without set-up and break down.

When I first learned about stealth recording from an old Chicago taper who's no longer with us, he taught me to tape the mics to my shoulders. Works great seeing I'm over 6 feet tall and still allows you to move your head as normal.

I also heard good recordings made by similar little mics on shoulder under shirt.

Sometimes I place my CA-14 simply just above the collar/neck of a t-shirt. I "pull" out the mics to stay out of my t-shirt and thats it. Of course its amateur way but works, if you didnt move. And if you walked away after the show, put back under your shirt on your shoulders... get out again when the next starts.

If you can't get your mics to the highest
part of your body, then you are not going
to be making the best possible recordings.
Figure it out, you are not re-inventing the wheel.

It's nothing groundbreaking as most of us were already doing this method, but here it is:  please request a PM in this thread for details.

Moderated by BSkalinder | TS has an informal policy of keeping stealth, well...stealth.  That means we try to avoid public discussions of stealth methods and discuss them strictly via PM or email.  Thanks for your understanding.

Kind of silly for you to be so bothered by it. Are we back to the early days of the internet when people bitched about "waste of bandwidth" again? If not, then don't read all six pages and enjoy the time you saved. Simple enough.

I stopped answering those PMs a while back. I had everything typed up in a text file and would copy and paste to PM. I inadvertently erased that file and I'm not  retyping it.
