Church Audio Preamp into jb3
« on: June 09, 2005, 10:17:47 AM »
Please, no flames - I've read all the posts!

I'm on a VERY limited budget, so I can't get an AD-20 or anything - I need a battery powered preamp to go between my incoming jb3 and my AT853 mics.

Has anybody actually used the Church Audio preamp into a jb3?

It seems that Chuch and Visivox are the only vendors who offer this at under 100.

I'm used to running my 853s through a SP battery box (with levels and bass rolloff), but that won't get me enough gain for the jb3, or so I understand.

I've read about line transformers but don't see how I could use them, since the mics terminate into a single stereo 1/8" plug.

I'd really like to use the jb3 rather than a MD with mic inputs - please help!

There are MANY folks who use the SP preamps here, and with good results. True to get your mics full potential, they need to be modded for phantom power, but like i said, many folks here use sp pres. I dont know of anyone personally who uses church audio stuff.

I've got the same setup, and I'm having compatibility issues.  I'm talking to Chris about sending it back to him for some modifications.  The pad isn't big enough for these hot microphones.

Thanks for the tip - I ordered mine this morning, and sent Chris an email after reading your comment. Hopefully all of us will be happy with the result.

When you say the pad isn't big enough, you're meaning that using the preamp into the jp3 linein the levels are too loud? In a case like that, I still have my battery pack/levels/rolloff from soundpros, so I could use those directly for loud shows. My concern was the softer stuff needing more gain, not so much the other way.

I haven't used this setup to tape anything other than band practice (we need all the help we can get ::)), so the levels aren't really near club volumes.  The preamp distorted constantly in the +20db setting, and slightly with the -20 setting.  If I used the high pass filter in the -20 setting it was okay.

Chris said that the mics have too much voltage swing and need to be padded down via resistive pad.

I used it with a stereo condenser mic previously and had great results, so it's these mics.

Well, I have to admit that I use the Church Audio (I too am on a tight budget) between my high end mic madness and Sony MZ-R70 and I have to say that so far, I've been rather happy with it.  On the +20 setting, the recordings get quite distorted so I set it at -20 and get decent recordings.  I emailed Church Audio and asked if they made a version with a knob or slide to have more control over the gain but they said no.

I use the Church Audio preamp and am quite happy with it. As others have said, it distorts on the +20 setting but works well with loud shows on the -20 setting.

I'm confused.... ???

I thought the Sound Professionals preamp was the one with the -20/+20 db switch. There is a "Chris" at SP.

I though the Church Audio preamp had the variable gain from 0 thru 20db. There is a "Chris" at Church Audio.

Does Church Audio also make a -20/+20 db switchable preamp?
