Topic: cheap, portable A/D converter?

anybody know of one?  preferably with XLR inputs.  since i moved to 24 bit, i haven't been able to take many patchers.  if someone has a DA-P1, then everything is fine.  i just run XLR out of the V3 and into the P1.  but very few patchers have a P1.  i'd like to continue to offer patches, but not if it becomes too expensive for me.  and i certainly don't want to lug around my old P1 just to use as an A/D converter.  any suggestions?

i don't know.  i'm looking around the apartment & see some stuff i could ebay for a couple hundred bucks.  so let's say $200 and below.

HMM...you could come close to that with a digi-mod ua-5.  Buy a stock one, and then digi-mod it yourself.   If you can't figure out how to do it, I can do it for you if you need it.  Other than that, I am not sure what other options you would have without going ultra cheap with the box mentioned in the yard sale section this morning.  If it was my money, I would get the ua-5, mod it myself as I think you might find other uses for it (matrix tapes) as well.  You could even use it as a soundcard, but I don't believe it is deemed bit perfect on the digi in.

doesnt the digimod disable 24 bit standalone without a computer, that would be worth checking out, as i think you can only do 24 bit when you are going usb to a comp, maybe im wrong, but worth checking

The 'digimod' only disables playback from computer through the UA5 via USB.  If set to 24bit, it will send 24bit to the optical and coax spdif outputs even if not connected to a computer.

You'll need attenuators (-20db?) if you plan on running xlr's from the V3 to the xlr mic inputs of the UA5.  Better would be to get a set of xlr>rca cables and run into the line inputs on the back of the UA5 - this should work without attenuators.

Yeah, what Craig said.  Craig, have you or anyone else gotten reliable 24/48 outta the pda thing yet?  I was reading laptop tapers and it appears someone has!
I would LOVE to sell the laptop and go this route, but I am not sure of reliability yet!

I know one person has done reliable 24/48 & 24/96 to a CF memory card.  Unfortunately, the CF cards are very expensive and I think are only up to 1GB capacity right now.  More economical is using the 5GB pcmcia cards, but apparently they aren't fast enough to do 24bit - at least on my PDA.

i run a ua5 (that i mod'd myself paid 249 shipped) behind my v3 for dats. ran it last night for the first time. i got some xlr > rca connectors for like 5$ and some rca cable and use the inputs on the back. i also have attenuators that have the 10, 20, 30 switch for when i want to try matrixes.
