Thoughts on ACM V3
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:03:48 AM »
Any thoughts on the Oade ACM mod for the V3? Thankfully I understand the mod leaves the Grace pre's alone.

Well since I have the first modded V3 as well as it being the ACM mod I have a bunch of thoughts.

First and foremost I want to let it be known that the mod is NOT for all mics.  I did not like it at all with either my AKG's (480) or the Neumann 140's.  The 140's worked alot better than the 480's but they still weren't perfect.   Currently i've been using it with my Neumann midside setup and it sounds great.  I'l run it with the DPA's next week for Mule and Panic.

The mod itself ONLY affects the a/d chips within the unit.  Nothing on the preamp side is touched thankfully.  The biggest thing that comes to mind when I think of the sound is "big soundstage".  Really a huge improvement.  I've found that the sound also tends to be more in your face than stock.  The big soundstage sound takes away alot of the sterility of the stock a/d section.

For a good example orechall ran my ACM V3 this past weekend at Panic.  4023 > ACM V3 > 722.  I've only heard the first night so far but I honestly think that of all the sources out that his are the winners.  Lots of other great sounding tapes but his really do standout.

I'd be more than happy to answer any specific questions if you have nay about the mod.

Thanks.

I was always an Apogee supporter/fan but I never thought the V3 A/D was that terrible.

Slightly off topic but any chance somebody out there on this "series of tubes" called the internet has a PSP-2/V2/V3/Mini-Me that is collecting dust? I'll give it a nice home.

I was always an Apogee supporter/fan but I never thought the V3 A/D was that terrible.

The V3 a/d section sounded great to my ears at 16 bit but left alot to be desired at 24 bit.   Totally personal opinion as alot of V3 owners love the sound to their own ears.  Me?  I wanted a change and after talking with Doug for a while about it he broached the thought of a V3 a/d mod he was thinking of.  I went ahead and did it and have been generally happy with it.

As per my previous post the ACM is not for every mic but I think it pairs up exceptionally well with the DPA's.

Here's a recent show that orechall recorded borrowing my ACM V3.

http://www.archive.org/details/moe2008-04-11.dpa4023

I believe in addition to the ACM mod he was offering a TCM mod as well but as always you'd have to contact him to make sure.

I run an acm mod v3 with schoeps mk4/41's and have been very happy with it. I will add that to my untrained ears my recordings seem more detailed in the mid range since the mod. I dont know how since to my understanding Doug only mods the a/d chips. I think it pairs well with schoeps but would like to run a side by side comparison with a stock v3 and mk4/41's just to compare. Has anyone done this yet?

I had mine done as well - it resolved my only complaint about the V3 - it didn't come close to the Benchmark.
Now its much more of a "preference" rather than a clear choice.

Mine has no dust.. but I currently only use the analog preamp section.  I'm considering the mod for future 24bit out use.

Anyone know what's the difference between the two since this is an A/D mod and not a preamp mod?

Technically not a clue - but ACM = advanced concert mod and TCM = transparent concert mod.

nothing touches the ad2k for detail, esp in the high frequencies.

i did a comp here awhile back with stock v3 vs ACM v3 vs AD2K with mk4's+cmc6

This thing sounds massive. I have to turn down the bass on my stereo much more than before the mod. The bass sounds huge and round. I'd say it does produce more of a 3d image. I've only used it twice so far. I'll try to do a comp at Panic charlotte.

Significant difference between the three to my ears, even on crappy laptop and mid grade computer speakers.  I'm away from the home stereo currently.

those are all cut to the same starting point,i suggest putting them in a good multitrack program like vegas where you can toggle them on or off at the same point. there are a lot of varying kinds of musical passes in there to check out

Oh no, comparison poetry.  I need to listen on the good stereo, but I hear a bit more transparency in the top mostly, maybe a difference in the lower end too but that's really hard to hear on the little speakers.  I still liked the AD2K the best for clear transparent top, but the ModV3 has a certain richness.  Uggg poetic bs /off.

greetings all!
Had my V3 modified by Doug in May. Since then I have made over a dozen recordings using a
pair of Neumann km140's.

My opinion? I don't like what the mod does to sound. At times the highs seem to be overdriven and the bass
tends to be muddy. I do think there is some improvement in overall sound stage openness but the loss
of crisp sonics that I came to love with my original V3 configuration have gone.

I plan on returning my lunatec to Doug to have his mod reversed.

Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?
I guess that what appeals to one person's taste may not appeal to everyone.

Attached mp3 is a track from the Charlottesville Phil show on 7/8/08 using km140's>V3 modified from the 16th row dfc.

Yes I felt the same way and sold my 140's because of it.

I also felt that the ACM mod did not work with my AKG's either.

Enter the DPA's and everything is different.  I think that the ACM mod with my  4021's makes the bass huge but very tight.  The highs seem very natural to my ears without much fatigue at all.   Soundstage is HUGE!

As more and more folks are getting the ACM mod its appearing that it is best paired with DPA's and Schoeps.

Doug was offering a TCM mod but I have not heard it yet and would assume that it would be better suited to the Neumann's and AKG's.

i agree with larry.

theres a reason the ad2k cost $1800 new - it was (is?) the best portable AD ever built

I plan on returning my lunatec to Doug to have his mod reversed.

I would think that it would be quicker, easier, and cheaper to just sell the oade mod V3 here on taperssection, and buy a used, non-mod V3 from someone else.  V3's pop up for sale in the yard sale section here very frequently, and I'm sure you could buy one for less than you could sell your modified V3.  just a thought...

It lessened the gap between the AD2k+ and the V3's AD, but you still prefer the AD2K?

i agree with larry.

theres a reason the ad2k cost $1800 new - it was (is?) the best portable AD ever built

or hook up another ts'er who wants an oade mod with a straight-away trade for their non-mod unit?

greetings all!

I do find myself reaching for the bass nob more than I used to. It does have more bass, that sounds more round. If that means anything to you. I'm still on the fence. I have two nights of panic/charlotte to listen to before I arrive at a conclusion.

The whole reason I looked in to this mod was because I didn't like some of my recent panic tapes. I'm anxious to hear these on my home stereo. SO far I have only had it on my headphones and it sounds nice. I'll add WSP 2005-07-25 to my offering for BnP. Send me a pm:

Too much bass with the 21's.

Doug was offering a TCM mod but I have not heard it yet and would assume that it would be better suited to the Neumann's and AKG's.

If he was, he is no longer does. I asked about 2 weeks ago.
never even heard of one person getting the tcm mod on here and that was the one I more interested in hearing being an akg guy. Dam that sucks

When Doug and I initially spoke about a possible V3 mod and after he first modded my unit I got the distinct feeling that it was going to be a word of mouth mod anyways.  Nothing on his site about it that i've ever seen.  I have to think that there would be at least one TCM modded unit out there somewhere.

If you're really considering trying a modded V3 to use with your AKG's then call him up and talk to him.  Doug is never at a loss for sharing his thoughts on sound and the sound different pieces of equipment make.

I'm happy enough with my stock V3 that it's not worth the effort for me. I only wanted to hear one for comparison sake.

Sweet!  Congrats Tommy, didn't know that  you were getting a non-stock V3.

Should be a good way to get some mic comps with the ACM V3's in NOLA.   DPA's x2, Senn's and Schoeps.

Also just to refresh things, when I first got my V3 modded by Doug I spoke with the guys over at Grace and was told they would definitely honor the warranty if Doug had worked on them.  Not sure if any of you have warranty left but good to know that Mike will honor it after its been modded.

I knew that but didn't know you were getting it modded.   Awesome.   For so long I was the only one that had one and now there are at least 6-7 out there that I know of.

Good to hear that Doug is still cranking things out if he's backed up 3 weeks.

As has been said before big big big soundstage.   You'll love it!

I have run it about 6 times and love it. So far as I can tell, I don't have any dislikes. The soundstage is huge and the bass is thumping. I think it is an improvement over the stock when paired with the schoeps. Ended up trading Dave Howard for his at the Watermelon Park Festival 9/19. What did you think about the Meters show?

I have to agree that the bass smacks you in the face pretty hard with the ACM mod.  I typically will roll off anywhere from 50Hz - 90Hz in post.  While I think it probably would save me a bunch of time if I did it on the fly I like being able to set exactly how much roll off to use as well as how steep that roll off should be.

Depending on your internal jumpers position in the V3  #2 is always the lower frequencies (either 50Hz or 75Hz) the #1 position is (100Hz or 125Hz respectively)  I think by default that the V3 using the low settings:

1: 100Hz
2: 50Hz

Well in Chris' defense running the ACM V3 with the DPA's really doesn't have the same effect as the Schoeps and Neumann's do   With the Schoeps/Neumann's you do get that bloated sense of bass.  Overpowering alot of times.   With the 402x's the bass is there but it is super tight and  more focused.  I've found that I rarely need to EQ the recording since I sold the 140's and bought the 4021's.

I'm taping Panic tomorrow and Saturday in Austin and ill seed the 4021 > ACM V3 Friday source without any EQ'ing other than volume adjustments.  We'll see how the bass sounds.

Anyone got one of these in the North East?

I'm thinking about sending mine out for mod... the Earthworks can use some bottom end, but I'd really like to try it out before committing.

I was hoping if someone has one, and will be at a show I will be at, maybe we can swap for the opening act or for the evening.

Thanks,

Joe,

I am convinced the mod is the way to go with the mics I use I know it probably will be different with different mics but I will tell you this...I got a busy month but when I get back in town from new orleans after halloween I could ship you mine for you to try out. I have a fairly busy november as well but I am sure we could work something out.  no need in getting the mod if it doesnt work with your mics...shoot me a pm at some point and we can work it out.

I'm looking for a ballpark figure - how much 80hz rolloff did you use for your various recordings?
I don't have much experience in the bass rolloff area and would like a probable starting point if I need it for the Gefell mics.  Thank you!

I have run it with hpf/2 in real boomy halls with great results in front of mk41's. If you run Schoeps V3 you really need to look into the mod I have never been more pleased with my recordings.

Hey i'll bump this up to keep it going.

I ran the stock V3 with 4023's and mk4/41 and thought
the recordings were very good.. The ACM unit takes it to
a whole other level. The VERY best recordings i have ever made
were done with 4023 > ACM V3

My question......what would take it to the next level?
Is there another A/D that would sound better with my
mics. For open taping i don't mind bringing along another unit.

the two best portable A/D units that I have heard is the Benchmark AD2402-96 (aka the AD2K+) and the Mytek Stereo192 ADC.  Using the V3's pre-amp infront of either of those is definitely a top-notch gear chain.  Lynchie runs 4023 > V3 > AD2K and makes some great tapes....  maybe it's time for some ACM V3 vs. AD2K vs mytek comparison tapes...

I think the acm v3 is tough to beat with the 4023's depending on the band and the room...for panic I like the sax better with the dpa's.  I just picked up another ad2k...Next shows I run at here in two weeks I will comp the acm v3 vs the v3 analog out>ad2k.  I was really wondering how the sax was going to sound in front of the ad2k.
