The msbm-1 can NOT hold the ad1k. ;D

it's damn close sonically and when you account for all of the BS associated with an ad1000 and the fact that you can't get them fixed when they break (which could be tomorrow or in 6mos, it's a big gamble) I'd give the nod to the modsbm-1 over the ad500e and ad1000 at this point.

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

will you still love the ad1k when all it is good for is a doorstop?

I can understand people riding it out with the older apogee units if they already have had one for awhile but no way would I recommend someone to buy one now.

but if the choice is between v2->modsbm-1 and straight minime, and 24 bit is not a concern, then I'd give the nod to the v2/mdsbm-1 combo.

Between V2 > modSBM-1 and straight Mini Me, yeah, I can see going with the former. Between the V2 > modSBM-1 and V2 > MMe, You have got to admit, this combo rocks (v2>MMe), and is a different beast.

V2->MiniMe was my favorite combo when I had the minime, loved it... preferred it over the V3 and straight minime. v2->minime is a great combo and if you have the extra cash I highly recommend it!

hopefully it won't become a doorstop.  I baby this thing.  Was given a clean bill of health before i bought it, and hasn't failed me in about 2 years now.  Granted, when it eventually craps out, which all gear does, not just apogee, I will most likely not fix it -- I'll just get a v3  :P ;D  Go team Grace!!!!

sure it does.  show me a vintage neve desk(some of the best built pieces of equipment ever) that never crapped out and needed repair.  All gear eventually craps out.  The question is "how soon".  If that's the question, then yes, apogee pieces do seem to die a little sooner than others, but it all dies at some point.

If you add all those factors in then yes, the mSBM-1 gets the nod. I was only refering to their sonic characteristics. I should have said, "the sbm-1 can NOT hold the ad1k...sonically". I agree, the msbm-1 comes close but IMO, it's still not up to par with the ad1k (line in or mic in). With that said, I own a ad1k and I'm looking for a msbm-1 to add to my collection.

Stoopidstp, you can't go wrong with V2>mSBM-1 or V2>MMe.

Sorry to piss in the pool guys ;) But I've heard a lot of mod SBM combos, and I almost always wish they would have run an Apogee. The mod for the SBM does not effect the dithering scheme. I don't think SBM is much better than the AD in the M1, and you can have the M1 modded too.

I think he's been listening to me... I was an apogee fan before I even met him.

I can say that about a stock sbm-1 but not the modded version.

I'm in the same boat(can only afford 1 or the other)...have run a V2 once behind the TL's and I absolutely loved it, but I cant afford a V2 AND a ADC right now...been thinking of getting a MMe till I can afford a seperate pre, which would almost obviously be a V2...

unless(in a month when my tax returns come in) someone would be willing to sell a V2>mod-SBM1 for the price of a MMe?! :)

to me Bigham has best described the sound of a stock sbm-1...
"I think it tends to make almost every mic sound like an sbm1."
