Can you power a ua-5 on 12 volt sla??
« on: January 15, 2004, 11:19:50 PM »
I just got a ua-5 off ebay. I need to power this. I dont have the $$$$ to build a rc pack yet. I already have 12 volt sla that I use to run my d10. I am pretty sure I can use this but want to make sure.

Be carerful! I am not sure you CAN power that with a 12V SLA. I think you could get away with maybe 10.5V or so, but 12V may damage the unit. I would contact Rolland to be sure.

If you go to Rack Shack and buy one of those AA batt sleds you can power it via AA alkaline cells......thats what I did for a back up pack.

Proceed with caution!!

How many AA batteries does it to run it?? Does that mean I can run it on 6 volts?

Check the Archival Info forum and try searching the Remote Power forum for easy answers to all things power related for the UA5.

You suck at the internet, Hoobash.   :P   :)

Try using the Advance Search feature with the keywords "UA5" and "12v".  You'll find this thread in which you already asked - and received an answer to - this very question.   You're good to go.  :coolguy:

I tried many different ways to search and couldnt find anything. It takes alot less time to ask a question. I didnt try 12v. I tried 12 volts with ua5 and ua-5 combo. I also tried ua5 + ua-5 battery. Searching the forum hasnt been all that helpful to me

When it comes to powering my gear I like to be 100% sure about it before I try it. I fear smoking something so I want to get some reinforcement from other

Even "UA5" and "12" would've worked, or "UA5" and "SLA", or...well, you get the idea and tried it - trying different keywords is crucial.  At any rate, thanks for trying, it's all I can ask.  One of these days I'll organize the Archival Info forum into a FAQ of somekind.  One of these days...

As for taking less time to ask a question, yeah - for YOU, maybe, but not for the people who answer the question.  I guess your time is more valuable.   ::)  Don't take it personally, Hoobash, I'm just grumpy this afternoon...   >:(

I hear you on that note - frying gear is no fun, glad I haven't done so yet.  If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage on your UA5 wall wart sometime - it'll show 12+ volts even though the UA5 specs say 9v!!

DOOD - This is what you need to do. Purchase a batt sled from Radio Shack that will hold 8 AA cells. If you happen to have AA NiMH cells you can use all 8 cells in the sled and it will only total up to 9.6V which is perfect (the AA NiMH cells are only 1.2V where as AA alkaline cells are 1.5V so that would total up to 12 V - too much).

If you DON'T have the AA NiMH cells, you can make a "jumper" or "dummy" cell to take the place of the 8th AA alkaline cell (thus only running 7 AA's x 1.5V = 10V and is ok) OR you can make a dummy cell that is as long as 2 AA's and only run 6 AA cells x 1.5V and that will bring you to 9V.

To make a dummy cell, go to a hardwarestore or hobby shop and purchase some metal round stock or metal rod that is approx. the same dia. as a AA cell (about .500in. dia). Cut this round stock the same length as the AA and place it in with all the other AA's. It will act as a "jumper" to the next batt sled contact but not add to the total voltage of the overall sled. You can also make this dummy cell the same length as two AA's stacked together thus allowing you to only run 6 real AA cells in the sled total.

I made one of these dummy cells when I had my UA-5 and it worked great and allowed me to run AA alkaline cells in a pinch, thus getting you out of recharging in the field.

Good luck!

I had no problems running off a 12 volt SLA....that's what oade sells as a battery for the ua-5 is a 12v sla.

fwiw I was poking around the power input section of the ua-5 today and it uses a Rohm BP5220 DC-DC converter to provide 5v internally.  That thing is rated to handle anything from 8 to 38 volts.

Not that I'd recommend using 38 (heat generation?) but you ain't gonna blow anything up with 12 volts.
